Liverpool lays foundation stone for new Belvedere stadium

A plaque, a stone and a president. Summed up that way it sounds like a small thing, but for Liverpool's faithful it was a snapshot that will be kept for years. This Saturday, August 15, at 12:30 pm, the Uruguayan club laid the Foundation Stone of its New Belvedere Stadium, with free admission for members and with a guest not usually seen at this kind of event: the president of the Republic, Yamandu Orsi.

The ceremony had its share of protocol, but it also carried real emotion. First to speak was Jose Luis Palma, Liverpool's president, and then came the moment everyone had been waiting for: the unveiling of the plaque alongside Orsi, symbolically sealing the start of construction on the new stadium in the Belvedere neighborhood.

The club had announced the project back in December of last year, laying out the details at the time. Since then, fans watched the idea take shape step by step: in June of this year, 2026, demolition began on what is now the "old" Belvedere, the stadium that bore witness to so many Sunday afternoons for the Negros de la Cuchilla. Watching it come down surely wasn't easy for anyone who spent time there, but it's also the necessary step before something new can rise in its place.

And something new is exactly what's coming. Later that same day, at 6:30 pm, the club has scheduled the official presentation of the New Belvedere Stadium Project, this time before government officials, institutional representatives and members of the media. In other words, the club didn't stop at the symbolic morning gesture, it also wants to show everyone, with blueprints and details on the table, exactly what the new home will look like.

Liverpool made that clear enough on social media, with a message that captured the spirit of the day:

Beyond the ceremony and the official photos, there's something here that goes past the purely institutional: a club that decides to invest in infrastructure and its own stadium is always thinking long term. This isn't a project that will be finished tomorrow or next week, but the stone has been laid, the old Belvedere has already come down and the project now has a date for its public unveiling. For the members who were there this Saturday, that was probably more than enough to start picturing what it will be like to cheer on the team in their new home.
