Liverpool hosts Tottenham in Carabao Cup third round

Anfield opens its doors again midweek, and this time it's neither Champions League nor Premier League business: it's the Carabao Cup pitting Liverpool against Tottenham in the third round. On paper it looks like a formality, but there's enough intrigue here to make it worth watching.

Liverpool's manager doesn't usually field a full-strength lineup in this competition, and some believe Andoni Iraola's Tottenham could exploit that rotation to pull off an upset. Worth being careful with that theory though: the Reds are the all-time record holders in this competition, with 10 titles in the cabinet, and they won't be handing anything away on their own turf. For Spurs, on the other hand, this tournament has become something of a recent obsession: they haven't lifted a trophy in two seasons, and they know the League Cup could be their quickest route out of that drought.

How both teams arrive

Liverpool hasn't had its sharpest week in front of goal: the club played out a 0-0 draw at home against Fulham, though it remains unbeaten in the Premier League. Still, in the Champions League the Reds got off to a strong start, beating Atletico Madrid 2-1. Up front, the pairing generating the most excitement is Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, who have started the season in red hot form. Add to that the guidance of Dominik Szoboszlai and the energy Victor Munoz can bring from midfield.

Tottenham, meanwhile, arrives with a considerably bigger problem: the club still hasn't won in the Premier League and, worse still, hasn't scored a single goal in the league this season. Its only win of the campaign so far was a resounding 5-1 victory over Charlton, which came in the second round of this very Carabao Cup. The scoreless draw against Everton in its last home outing confirms that Iraola's side is struggling to find any cutting edge going forward. That's where the names who could change that story come in: Dominic Solanke, Savinho and Mateus Fernandes carry the responsibility of unlocking the visitors' attack at Anfield.

The most recent meeting between the two sides left an even feeling. In matchday 30 of the 2025/2026 Premier League season, Liverpool couldn't get past a draw on home soil: Szoboszlai had put the hosts ahead, but Richarlison popped up with a late goal to rescue a point for Spurs.
