Liverpool and Atletico Madrid Set for Champions League Rematch in 2026-27, Repeating Last Season's Anfield Clash

Some draws in the Champions League are pure bureaucratic formality, while others carry real history with them. This one belongs to the second category. Liverpool and Atletico Madrid will face each other again in the league phase of the 2026-27 Champions League, once more at Anfield and once more on matchday one for both sides. The sense of deja vu is real: they already met at the same stadium and at a similar stage of the competition last season.

But beyond the scheduling, there's something else worth noting here: neither club could fully explain its present without looking at the other. And it all starts, inevitably, with Fernando "Niño" Torres.

The transfer that changed two histories

Torres had saved Atletico from relegation during a brutal stretch for the club and made his debut at just 17 years old wearing the shirt that would turn him into an idol for life. In 2007 he left for Liverpool for 35 million euros, a deal that also brought Luis Garcia back to the Metropolitano, another player who knew both shirts well and who had lifted the Champions League with the Reds.

That line sums up perfectly what happened next. At Liverpool, Torres hit his peak: he made the shortlist for the 2008 Ballon d'Or and scored 81 goals in 142 matches over four seasons, though he never won a major trophy with the Reds. Back in Madrid, meanwhile, that money helped build a competitive squad with names like Sergio Aguero, Diego Forlan, Simao and Maxi Rodriguez, the foundation on which Diego Simeone later built the cycle that delivered two Europa League titles (2010 and 2012), the Super Cup, and those two Champions League final losses in 2014 and 2016.

Suarez, the other goalscorer who made the reverse trip

When Torres left for Chelsea, Liverpool had just finished seventh in the Premier League and been knocked out of the Europa League by Sporting Braga. To replace him, the Reds brought in Luis Suarez from Ajax, with Kenny Dalglish in the dugout. It didn't click right away either: Liverpool again missed out on Europe's top competitions and had to settle for a League Cup. It wasn't until Suarez had established himself as a proven goalscorer that they came close to challenging for the Premier League title in the 2013-14 season, before it slipped away late on against Manchester City. Not long after, Jurgen Klopp arrived to rebuild the project that Arne Slot now continues.

And the circle closed in almost poetic fashion: years later, Suarez himself would end up spending a season at Atletico Madrid, where he won the league title.

Maxi Rodriguez and Rafa Benitez, the other bridges

Maxi Rodriguez is one of the few players in recent history to have worn both shirts: a teammate of Torres at Atletico before also joining Liverpool. And while no manager has ever coached both clubs, Rafa Benitez comes closest: born in Madrid and developed in Real Madrid's youth system, he managed Liverpool from 2004 to 2010, won the Champions League in 2005, and was the one who brought Luis Garcia from Atletico to Anfield, as well as managing Torres for much of his time in England.

The Champions League history between them

The upcoming match repeats exactly the one they played on September 17, 2025, also at Anfield: Liverpool won 3-2 with a brace from Llorente for an Atletico side that fell just short, after early advantages from Robertson and Salah, and a decisive Van Dijk goal in stoppage time.

Counting that match, the two clubs have now met 7 times in the Champions League since their first meeting in 2008: three wins for Liverpool (the last three), two for Atletico, and two draws. They've almost always met in the group stage, with one exception: the knockout tie in 2020 in the quarterfinals, which Atletico won, also in stoppage time. Now, once again on matchday one of the league phase, both sides return to the stage where they've so often shared the spotlight.
