Lorient stuns Monaco, wins 1-0 on Cadiou penalty
Despite dominating possession and shots, Monaco fell to a Lorient side that defended with discipline and made the most of its one big chance in Ligue 1.

A penalty converted by Noah Cadiou in the 60th minute was enough for Lorient to claim all three points against Monaco: 1-0 at Stade du Moustoir - Yves Allainmat, in a Ligue 1 clash in which the home side saw far less of the ball but made its one clear chance count.
Monaco set out to control the game from the start and showed it with the ball, creating several chances in the first half as Ansu Fati and Matthis Abline tested the target from different spots without finding the net. Abline came close in the 33rd minute with a header that grazed the crossbar, and Aleksandr Golovin also had a go with a shot from outside the box. Lorient, for its part, didn't sit back either: Gabin Bernardeau and Ibrahima Balde had chances of their own before halftime, but the first half ended scoreless.
The second half opened with Monaco again on the front foot, with shots from Lamine Camara and Abline failing to find their way to goal. But the match turned in the 59th minute, when Denis Zakaria brought down Dembo Sylla inside the box and was shown a yellow card for the foul. A minute later, Cadiou stepped up and sent the penalty into the right side of the net to make it 1-0.
Trailing on the scoreboard, Monaco pushed forward and the substitutions soon followed: Folarin Balogun, Mathys Detourbet and Christian Mawissa all came on in search of an equalizer. Balogun had at least two clear chances, one of them a header that was stopped right under the crossbar, but Lorient's defense, anchored by Isaak Toure, held firm until the final whistle. Lorient also had its own chances to extend the lead late on, with shots from Dembo Sylla, Arsene Kouassi and Mamadou Kone failing to find the target, but the score stayed the same.
What the numbers say
The stats reflect a match of territorial dominance for Monaco that never translated into a goal. Lorient defended with order and struck at the right moment.
| Stat | Lorient | Monaco |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 42.2 | 57.8 |
| Shots | 9 | 15 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 4 |
| Corners | 3 | 4 |
| Passes | 478 | 661 |
| Fouls committed | 10 | 16 |
The most striking figure comes from the post-match expected goals estimate: our calculation gives Lorient 2.027 xG based on the location of its shots, against just 0.686 for Monaco. In other words, even though Monaco had more possession and more shots overall, Lorient's chances, including the penalty, carried greater quality by this measure.
The result also runs counter to our pre-match projection, which gave Monaco a 41% chance of winning, against 32% for Lorient and 27% for a draw, with combined expected goals of 3.02 (1.41 for the home side and 1.61 for the visitors). Neither did the goal tally come close to that mark, nor did the favorite win: Lorient prevailed with a single goal and an offensive output well below what we anticipated for both sides.
What the result means
In the standings, Monaco moves to 14 points through 7 matches, with a record of 4 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss, while Lorient sits on 11 points from the same number of games, with 3 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. The gap between the two sides in the table now stands at just 3 points, a distance this result helps narrow. For Lorient, it was an afternoon of efficiency and resilience; for Monaco, a case of ball control that wasn't enough to break down an opponent that knew how to wait for its moment.
