Luis Díaz scores as Bayern rout Leipzig in Telekom Cup

The Colombian opened the scoring with a spectacular right-footed strike and was the standout player in Kompany's side's 3-1 win in their first match at the Allianz Arena following the Asian tour.

Luis Díaz scores as Bayern rout Leipzig in Telekom Cup

The left post of Leipzig's goal is probably still shaking. In the 13th minute, Luis Díaz took a touch, set his body and unleashed a right-footed shot that snuck in right next to the post, leaving the opposing goalkeeper with no chance. It was the first goal of the night and also the perfect summary of what his run with Bayern Munich has looked like so far.

Kompany's side went on to win 3-1 over Martín Demichelis's Leipzig at the Allianz Arena, in a Telekom Cup match that served as the first meeting with the home fans since returning from the Asian tour. That tour had produced two wins and a goal from the Colombian himself, so in a way, the streak kept going.

For this match, Kompany still could not count on Harry Kane or Michael Olise, both given extended rest after the World Cup. In their place, there was room to look at some new faces: Brown started and scored, while Saibari got his first minutes in the Bavarian jersey after coming on in the second half.

A controlled match, with Lucho as the headliner

Strictly speaking, it was not the kind of performance that leaves jaws on the floor. Bayern managed the game from start to finish without needing to push too hard, which makes sense for a preseason friendly. But within that control, Luis Díaz was the name that got the crowd buzzing the most.

After his goal, the Colombian only got more comfortable. He drove at defenders, combined with teammates, pulled off a couple of dribbles that got the Allianz crowd out of their seats, and moved freely down the left, the flank where Bayern is testing him as a regular starter. He played alongside a completely unfamiliar front line, sharing the attack with two youth players, Ibrahimovic and Blinder, and still found the space to create danger.

Sporting the platinum look he debuted recently, Lucho played 70 minutes and left the field to applause, direct recognition for an effort that had also paved the way for the win. The rest of the goals came from Brown, the new signing who started the match, and from Jamal Musiala, who came on in the second half and scored the third.

What's next: Supercup against Dortmund

With this friendly now behind them, attention turns to Luis Díaz's first official match with Bayern. It will come on Saturday, August 22, at 1:30 p.m. (Colombia time), when the Bavarian side faces Borussia Dortmund in the German Supercup, with a trophy on the line. That is when fans will find out whether the Colombian's strong preseason form carries over once the games that truly matter get underway.
