Luis Díaz enters his second Champions League with a more mature Bayern after seven goals and three assists
The Colombian winger has evolved his game after a breakout European campaign in his first year in Germany.

There's one image that sums up what last season's Champions League left Luis Díaz with: head down, tears in his eyes, walking out of the Allianz Arena on May 6 after the 1-1 draw against PSG that snuffed out Bayern Munich's semifinal dream. Months later, that very image is the starting point for a fresh wave of hope.
Because you can't talk about "Lucho's" European season without mentioning numbers that, for a Colombian winger in his first year in Germany, sound like a breakout campaign. Seven goals and three assists in 12 games in last season's Champions League. His best return across seven appearances in the competition. And these weren't just any goals.
He came out swinging, scoring a brace against PSG themselves no less, in the league phase. A red card for a foul on Achraf Hakimi sidelined him for a couple of matchdays, but he came back hungry: he scored against Atalanta and, once the competition reached its decisive stretch, cast himself as Real Madrid's tormentor in the quarterfinals, scoring in the Bernabéu and also in Munich, the latter a right-footed strike in stoppage time that spared the tie from being decided on penalties.
Against PSG, already in the semifinals, he delivered another spectacular goal in the first leg, right in the heart of Paris. It wasn't enough. Bayern were eliminated by the team that would go on to win the title, but Díaz's level in that series made clear it was no ordinary exit for the Bavarian side.
A more mature version for the new challenge
Now he arrives at his second Champions League with Bayern, and everything points to a more mature version of himself, better integrated into what's shaping up to be one of the most dangerous attacking trios in Europe. The season kicked off with a trophy already in hand: the German Super Cup, won against Borussia Dortmund.
Head coach Vincent Kompany was clear about the squad's mindset after that opening triumph:
The most important thing is the mentality, and it's there. Today we won, and starting tomorrow the focus will be on the next game. Today we're happy and satisfied, but starting tomorrow we'll be hungry again.Vincent Kompany
For Díaz, this Champions League campaign also carries personal weight. After a modest Club World Cup with his national team, the European tournament presents itself as the most direct path to redemption. His ambition remains intact, his game has evolved, and once again a demanding schedule awaits him, full of heavyweight opponents and that unfinished business left open by the bittersweet draw against PSG in Munich.
