Luis Suárez becomes Sporting CP's all-time leading scorer in the Champions League

The Colombian forward reached seven goals in the competition and has now scored nine goals in just 10 matches this season.

Luis Suárez becomes Sporting CP's all-time leading scorer in the Champions League

One goal in France was enough to rewrite a small piece of Sporting CP's history. With his strike against Lens, Luis Suárez reached seven goals and became the all-time leading scorer for the Portuguese club in Champions League history. That's no small feat for a forward who is only in his second season wearing the jersey.

The number is even more striking when you look at the calendar: so far this season, Suárez has already piled up nine goals in 10 matches. That consistency has been building for a while, since in his first campaign in Lisbon he scored 38 goals, a tally that opened the door to the Colombian national team and earned him a spot at the World Cup. Offensively, the Colombian shows no mercy.

But the player himself insists it's not just about numbers. He made that clear in comments to the club's official media:

Beyond the goals, I promise hard work, leaving everything on the field and representing Sporting the way it deserves, carrying its colors as high as possible.Luis Suárez

The start of the season, however, wasn't easy. The transfer window brought rumors about a possible departure, and with them came a certain wariness from the stands. There was real anxiety in those early weeks, the kind you can feel in the air of a stadium. But goals have a way of silencing doubts and calming nerves, and Suárez's performances eventually drowned out the noise. The crowd came back around to him, and he admits it hits him deeply:

I get goosebumps afterward, once I'm calm and thinking about how the fans chant our names and sing my song. During the match, I'm one hundred percent focused. No matter how many goals I score, I enjoy it for a second, but I immediately go back into work mode.Luis Suárez

A new test against LASK

The competition doesn't wait, and for the third matchday of the Champions League league phase, Sporting will host LASK of Austria, a team with one of the most porous defenses in the tournament. For a forward with the hunger Suárez claims to have, it sounds like a date circled in red.

So where does that insatiable ambition come from? The Colombian explained it by looking back at his roots:

Growing up in Colombia, I dreamed of playing in the best leagues and competitions, and of representing my country. I wasn't aware of how difficult that would be, so having achieved it is a source of pride. When I score, I immediately think about scoring another one. That's what keeps my hunger from ever being satisfied.Luis Suárez

With that appetite still intact, the record of seven Champions League goals might not last very long.
