Alexis Mac Allister wants a new deal Liverpool hasn't offered him yet
The World Cup winning midfielder admitted it stings to watch his midfield teammates lock in new contracts with the English club while his own future stays up in the air.
Something doesn't quite add up in Alexis Mac Allister's latest press conference. While his midfield teammates keep signing new deals one after another, he's still waiting for a call that, for now, hasn't come. And he said it without dancing around the issue, with a bluntness you don't always see at the highest level of the sport.
The 2022 World Cup champion with Argentina admitted that the club's decision not to offer him a contract extension left him hurt. He didn't hide it or reach for some diplomatic, by-the-book line. He spoke plainly, and that alone says a lot about how he feels behind closed doors.
I got the news that the club wasn't in a position to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad because I think everyone can see that I give 100% for this club every day, in training and in matches.Alexis Mac Allister
The context helps explain the discomfort. This year, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch signed their renewals with Liverpool, and Mac Allister had no problem celebrating it. But he also made clear that it stings to be left off that list.
I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me really happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a bit sad not to have gotten mine done. Of course, there's still time. I think the fans don't need to worry, because I'm going to give 100% until the last day I'm here.Alexis Mac Allister
What adds weight to all this is his current deal: the midfielder is under contract with Liverpool through the 2027-28 season, so there's no immediate urgency from a strictly contractual standpoint. But Mac Allister himself admitted he had options to leave in this last transfer window and chose to stay anyway. That detail isn't minor: without a renewal, the player gains leverage to negotiate an exit next year, and Liverpool risks losing him for nothing if the contract runs out without an agreement.
The 2024-25 Premier League champion was also clear about his form on the pitch, making it plain he doesn't feel he needs to prove his worth to anyone.
It's a very successful period of my life and I don't think I have to prove anything, but of course I have to show the level I can perform at.Alexis Mac Allister
Iraola's response
Asked about his midfielder's comments, manager Andoni Iraola, who was overseeing his first European match in charge of Liverpool, against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League opener, didn't hesitate to back him.
The important thing is that he wants to be here. He wants to keep being here. I value that a lot.Andoni Iraola
Mac Allister joined Liverpool in 2023, in Jurgen Klopp's final season in charge of the club, and has been a regular fixture in midfield ever since. For now, the situation remains open: no breakup, no agreement, just the wait for an offer the player himself admits still hasn't arrived.
