Macará dominates Santos but can't break scoreless deadlock in Copa Sudamericana Round of 16
The Ecuadorian side was superior in play and chances created, but couldn't overturn the advantage Santos built in the first leg (2-1).

Macará and Santos played to a 0-0 draw at Estadio Bellavista Universidad Indoamérica in the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16. The Ecuadorian side controlled much of the match and produced the clearer chances, but couldn't break down a Santos team that, without needing to do much going forward, held onto the result it had built in the first leg, a 2-1 home win.
The road to this tie made the context clear: in the first meeting of this round, Santos beat Macará 2-1 at home, while the Ecuadorian club fell 1-2 on its trip to Brazil. With that backdrop, the home side needed to flip the script in Ecuador, and came out from the opening whistle looking to do just that.
Dominance without a payoff
Macará took control of the ball from the first minutes and wasted little time creating danger: in the 8th minute, Agustín Campana tested Santos twice with shots that were blocked, and three minutes later he fired another point-blank attempt that was stopped right on the goal line. The home side kept up the pressure with efforts from Franco Posse and Matías Miranda that tested the Santos defense, though the visiting goal held firm through a first half that ended level without goals.
The second half followed a similar script. Macará continued to dictate the pace with shots from Posse, Miranda and Campana, while Santos answered with isolated attempts from Thaciano, Gustavo Caballero and Willian Arão, the latter with a header off a corner that went just wide. The match was interrupted several times for hydration breaks and by an injury to Thaciano, who was replaced by Miguel Terceros. Late on, deep into stoppage time, Pedro Assis had the clearest chance for the Brazilian side on a counterattack, but his shot sailed over the crossbar. Macará came close as well, with a Miranda shot that struck the crossbar in the 86th minute. Neither team could find the breakthrough, and the score stayed at a final 0-0.
The numbers behind the home side's dominance
| Statistic | Macará | Santos |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 56.3 | 43.7 |
| Shots | 14 | 7 |
| Shots on target | 3 | - |
| Corners | 10 | 1 |
| Passes | 404 | 329 |
| Fouls committed | 11 | 11 |
The numbers back up what was seen on the field: Macará was clearly superior in attacking volume, doubling Santos's shot total and winning ten corners to just one for its opponent. The estimated xG for the match, calculated after the fact based on shot locations, supports that edge: 0.99 for Macará compared to 0.41 for Santos. Still, that output never translated into goals, which goes a long way toward explaining the final result.
What the preview said versus what happened on the field
Before kickoff, our projection gave Santos a 40% chance of winning, with 32% for a draw and 28% for Macará, with expected goals of 1.25 for the visitors and 1 for the home side. The outcome landed close to the second most likely scenario: a draw did occur, though the scoreless nature of it wasn't the version either side had projected as most probable, given a projected combined total of 2.25 goals.
The result leaves Santos in a comfortable position in the tie thanks to what it did in the first leg, while Macará is left with the feeling of having created enough to secure a win that never came. Offensive efficiency, or the lack of it at the decisive moments, ended up being the difference in a match that, in terms of volume of play, had a clear dominant side.
