Malaga and Levante Split the Points at La Rosaleda in a Scoreless Draw
Malaga dominated possession but couldn't convert its chances, including a penalty missed by Chupe in the 8th minute.
There was a penalty, there was a stunning miss, and above all, there was plenty of Malaga on the ball. But when referee Luis Bestard Servera blew the final whistle at La Rosaleda, the scoreboard was still blank: 0-0 between Malaga and Levante, in a LaLiga match decided more by what didn't go in than by what actually happened.
The story began early. In the 6th minute, Nacho Pérez conceded a penalty after handling the ball inside the Levante box. It was a golden chance for Malaga to break the deadlock from the spot. But in the 8th minute, Chupe fired his low shot straight at the goalkeeper, who read the shot and saved it right under the posts. It's the kind of miss that carries extra weight when the final result is a scoreless draw: it could have made all the difference, and it ended up meaning nothing.
From there, the match settled into a pattern that repeated itself over the full ninety minutes: Malaga with the ball, creating chance after chance without reward, and Levante waiting for its moment on the counter. David Larrubia gave a warning in the 18th minute with a shot that grazed the left post. Chupe tried his luck again in the 28th and 37th minutes, the latter forcing a demanding save from the visiting goalkeeper. On the other side, Adrián de la Fuente and Enzo Bardeli threatened with shots from outside the box that went high, while Thiago Fernández caused trouble with two blocked shots in quick succession in the 34th minute.
Second-Half Chances, But No Reward
The second half started much the same way. Iván Romero headed a cross just wide of the crossbar in the 47th minute, and just four minutes later Ángel Recio, by then wearing Malaga's colors, forced a great diving save that grazed the top corner. On that same play, Levante answered with a low shot from Iván Romero that was also saved right under the posts. The ball kept moving end to end without either side finding the decisive opening.
The substitutions on both benches (as many as three for Levante between the 76th and 85th minutes, and constant changes for Malaga with the introductions of Izan Merino, Joaquín Muñoz, Carlos Puga, Ramón Enríquez and Jens Cajuste) didn't change the script much. Carlos Dotor had the clearest chance of the closing stretch for Malaga in the 71st minute, with a shot that also grazed the top corner, but the score would not move again.
What the Numbers Show
The home side clearly dominated the ball, but that didn't translate into more real danger. The stats show a match that was even in clear chances despite the gap in possession:
| Stat | Malaga | Levante |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 62.8 | 37.2 |
| Shots | 10 | 11 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 3 |
| Corners | 6 | 4 |
| Passes | 578 | 335 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 11 |
Our own xG estimate based on the match's shots puts Malaga at 1.54 and Levante at 1.11, figures that reflect the home side generating a bit more danger, consistent with its missed penalty and near misses off the post, though it never showed up on the scoreboard.
Our preview had given Malaga a 34% chance of victory, 28% for a draw and 38% for Levante, with expected goals of 1.37 for the home side and 1.44 for the visitors. The draw, the least likely of the three outcomes in that projection, ended up being exactly what happened.
What the Point Leaves Behind
In the standings, splitting the points doesn't change much for either side. Levante arrives at this match with a record of one win, two draws and one loss through its first four fixtures, while Malaga has two draws and two losses without a win yet this season. The gap between the two sides in the table was just 3 points before this draw, and the result at La Rosaleda confirms that these are, for now, two teams more suited to picking up points one at a time than in bunches of three.
