Malta rallies past Andorra to open Nations League campaign with a win

Guillaume Lopez put Andorra ahead in the 16th minute, curling a left-footed shot from the center of the box into the right corner of the Malta goal. The Estadi de la FAF d'Encamp lit up, but the home side's lead didn't last: Malta ended up flipping the result and took the match 1-2 on matchday one of Group D1 in the UEFA Nations League.

The equalizer came in the 35th minute on a quick counterattack: Teddy Teuma slipped in a through ball and Irvin Cardona finished with his right foot from inside the box to make it 1-1. There were more scares before halftime: Matthew Guillaumier crashed a shot off the right post in the 42nd minute, a moment that could have changed the story of the match before the teams went into the break level.

In the second half, Malta was the team pushing hardest and it paid off. Teuma, this time on the finishing end, scored the 1-2 in the 80th minute off a Cardona assist, the two swapping roles from Malta's first goal. There was still a tense moment in the 83rd minute, when Alex Martinez brought down Ilyas Chouaref in the box for a penalty, but Chouaref himself missed the kick, blazing it over the crossbar, keeping the gap from growing any further before the final whistle.

Dominance backed up by the numbers

The match stats reflect fairly well what played out on the field: Malta controlled more of the ball, created more clear chances and finished with more shots on target.

Total shots ended up even, but the quality of the chances made the difference. But it wasn't enough to hold onto the lead or to keep Malta, with more possession and more clear chances, from taking the three points out of Encamp.
