Man Pleads Not Guilty to Racially Abusing Jess Carter During Euros

An English courtroom became the setting this week for a case that reaches far beyond soccer. A 19-year-old appeared before Chelmsford Magistrates' Court accused of sending a racist message to England international Jess Carter.

The defendant, identified as Aaryan Aggarwal of Chigwell, Essex, faces a charge of sending an offensive, indecent, obscene or threatening message over a public network. At Wednesday's hearing, he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The case dates back to an incident during last year's Women's Euros. According to prosecutor Grace Court, Carter received the racist message on July 17, the very same day England knocked Sweden out in the quarterfinals of the tournament. In other words, the player was targeted with the abuse at the emotional peak of the competition, just as the team was celebrating one of its biggest results of the summer.

That overlap in timing is no small detail for understanding the context: while England was celebrating its place in the semifinals, one of its players was being subjected to racist abuse on social media, something that has unfortunately kept happening in both the women's and men's game in recent years whenever high profile matches are played.

With the not guilty plea now entered, the legal process will continue for several more months. The court set the trial date for October 3 of next year, with proceedings to take place at Cambridge Magistrates' Court.

It will be more than a year, then, before there is any resolution to a case that once again puts the spotlight on online racism directed at soccer players, a problem that federations and players themselves have repeatedly called out without, so far, finding a lasting solution.
