Manchester City locks up Jérémy Doku with new deal through 2031

The Belgian winger commits to Maresca's project after establishing himself as one of the most decisive pieces in the City attack.

When Jérémy Doku squares up to a fullback, he doesn't ask for permission: he dribbles, he accelerates, and more often than not, he wins the duel. That version of the Belgian, the one who has given half the Premier League fits since he arrived in Manchester, is the one Manchester City just locked down on paper through 2031.

The club confirmed on Thursday a five-year contract extension for the winger, who joined from Rennes in 2023 and, in a little over two seasons, turned into one of the most decisive pieces of the City attack. This isn't a new signing or a market surprise, it's confirmation of something that had already been in the works: Doku was staying, and now he's staying for a long time.

Why now? City is going through a change of cycle with Enzo Maresca taking over on the touchline, a coach whose style leans heavily on the imbalance wingers can create. And that's exactly where Doku thrives: one on one, with room to run and a left foot that punishes defenses the moment it finds a gap.

The player himself made clear that the idea of working under that setup excites him just as much as staying in Manchester does.

His style of play is the kind we love, so that's exciting for the players.Jérémy Doku

A Belgian who feels at home

Doku didn't hide the fact that he feels settled at the club. After an adjustment period in which he had to earn his spot in a squad packed with attacking talent, he ended up standing out through sheer difference in class and boldness, something that isn't always easy in a locker room full of big names.

For City, tying down one of its most unpredictable attackers through 2031 also sends a message beyond the club walls: in a market where young, dribbling wingers keep getting more expensive, locking in Doku's future means the club won't have to go shopping for a replacement of that profile anytime soon.

How the partnership with Maresca plays out in official competition remains to be seen, but the pieces, at least on paper, fit together: a coach who needs width and dribbling threats out wide, and a player who has made that his trademark since his Premier League debut. The rest will be decided on the pitch.
