Manchester United Has Gone 13 Years Without a Premier League Title, Still Chasing Ferguson's Ghost

With more than 2 billion euros spent and eight different managers, the club still hasn't found an identity that lets it truly compete for the title.

Manchester United Has Gone 13 Years Without a Premier League Title, Still Chasing Ferguson's Ghost

Thirteen years. Eight managers. Not a single Premier League title. That's the tab Manchester United has been running since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped away from the touchline in 2013, and no matter how much money it spends or how many players it brings in, the club seems doomed to keep running into the same shadow: its own.

Ferguson retired at 71, leaving behind a United side that had just won the league by 11 points over City, the exclamation point on 38 trophies in 26 seasons. Everyone knew replacing him would be hard. Nobody imagined it would be nearly impossible. Since then, United have gone through Moyes, Van Gaal, Mourinho, Solskjaer, Rangnick, Ten Hag, Amorim and now Michael Carrick. Attacking coaches, defensive ones, young ones, veterans, possession-based and direct-style. None of them managed to build anything that outlasted their own departure.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Big Six got busy building. City did it with Guardiola, Liverpool with Klopp, and Arsenal just pulled it off with Arteta. United was left watching from the sidelines. One number sums it up well: over these thirteen seasons, United sits just fifth in the cumulative points table with 859, trailing Chelsea (886), Arsenal (951), Liverpool (1,004) and, above all, Guardiola's City, which has racked up 1,096. That's a gap of 237 points, nearly 20 per season. That's the real distance between United and England's throne.

Gary Neville, who played under Ferguson, put it plainly not long ago:

"I'm no longer sure what this team is."Gary Neville
That line cuts right to the heart of the problem: United no longer knows how it wants to play.

An Identity That Never Fully Materialized

Arteta's Arsenal is the uncomfortable mirror. The Basque coach took over in December 2019 with Wenger's ghost still lingering around north London. It took him seven seasons, with three runner-up finishes along the way, to finally be crowned champion. Patience and a plan, nothing more. "We built the foundations we wanted," Arteta himself said, and today Arsenal looks set up for something longer lasting than a single title.

Ferguson himself needed time to get things going: six years without a domestic title and two runner-up finishes before kicking off the run of 13 Premier League titles. Today's United seems to have forgotten that very lesson from its own history.

Money wasn't the issue. Over these thirteen seasons, the club spent more than 2 billion euros on transfers, and in just the last five years alone it spent over 700 million, trailing only Arsenal and the ever-generous Chelsea. This summer brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for roughly 100 million, along with the return of Marcus Rashford after he won a title with Barcelona. Sensible signings, but without a clear style behind them to tie it all together.

Carrick Solved the Crisis, But Is That Enough?

Carrick took over a ship adrift after Amorim's exit and steered it onto the podium: third place, behind Arsenal and City, playing simple football with players in their natural positions and a sense of order restored. He's been confirmed for this season, which also brings the Champions League back into the picture. The question nobody can answer yet is whether the same manager who stabilized the ship has what it takes to lead it into a genuine title fight.

Ratcliffe, one of the club's most influential executives, was self-critical about another sensitive issue:

"The academy has dropped off a lot."Ratcliffe
Carrick agrees there's unfinished business there:
"It's something we have to keep building on."Michael Carrick

United doesn't need to clone Ferguson, which would be impossible anyway. It needs to decide, once and for all, what kind of team it wants to be. As long as it keeps chasing the past like it's a treasure map, it will keep watching its rivals occupy the place that once belonged to United alone.
