Manchester United beat Leeds on penalties after Croke Park stalemate

Manchester United came out on top against Leeds United at Croke Park after a thrilling penalty shootout that ended 5-4, following a 90 minutes that finished level at 1-1 in this Club Friendlies fixture. United walk away with the win in the exhibition, while Leeds head home after having leveled the tie in regulation time.

A back-and-forth first half

United started the brighter of the two sides and were rewarded early: in the 15th minute, Joshua Zirkzee finished with his left foot from the center of the box after a counterattack set up by Bryan Mbeumo, making it 1-0. Leeds, though, answered quickly. Just thirteen minutes later, in the 28th, Brenden Aaronson leveled things with a low shot into the corner off an assist from Daniel James, and the score stayed at 1-1 through halftime.

Both before and after the goals, there were chances for each side: Zirkzee had given an early warning with a shot straight at the keeper in the 12th minute, and Daniel James, Jaka Bijol and United's own Amad Diallo and Mbeumo all threatened without finding a second goal. Leeds made a wholesale round of substitutions right at the start of the second half, essentially swapping out half the team.

Chances but no goals in the second half

The second half followed the same up-and-down pattern, but without goals. Harry Wilson and Alfie Cresswell tried their luck from outside the box for Leeds, while Amad Diallo and Anton Stach also had efforts for United, without luck. United had their best chance to break the deadlock late on, when Bruno Fernandes rattled the crossbar with a shot in the 84th minute, set up by Youri Tielemans. Neither side could find a winner in regulation, and the match went to penalties.

The shootout

In the shootout, both teams were nearly flawless from the spot, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Luke Shaw, Matheus Cunha, Anton Stach, Jack Fletcher, Wilfried Gnonto, Noah Okafor and Youri Tielemans all converting their attempts. The decisive moment came when Bruno Fernandes missed his kick, and in the next round, James Justin hit the crossbar for Leeds, sealing a 5-4 shootout win for the Manchester side.

United controlled possession and generated more shots overall, but Leeds were sharper in front of goal, putting more shots on target and creating more clear-cut chances despite seeing less of the ball. According to an in-house estimate calculated from the match's shots, the xG slightly favored Leeds, with 1.615 against United's 1.442, confirming that the 90-minute draw was no fluke and that the visitors had every reason to expect more than just a shootout defeat.

Projection versus reality

Pre-match projections had given United a 46% chance of victory, with a 28% probability of a draw and a 26% chance of a Leeds win, alongside expected goals of 1.57 for the home side and 1.14 for the visitors. The final outcome, a draw in the 90 minutes and a more even match xG (even tilted slightly toward Leeds), played out closer to a balanced script than the edge the model had given United before kickoff.

Takeaways

Manchester United take the more important result of the night thanks to their composure from the penalty spot, but the flow of the match showed a competitive Leeds United side, capable of equalizing quickly after conceding first and of creating as many, if not more, clear chances than their rivals. For United, the win comes after a squad rotation with numerous changes, and an outcome decided by fine margins rather than any clear on-field superiority.
