Manchester United completes deal for Carlos Baleba worth up to 70 million pounds

Manchester United's midfield rebuild is picking up steam again. According to a report from the BBC, the Old Trafford club has reached an agreement with Brighton to sign Carlos Baleba for a fee that could rise to as much as 70 million pounds (roughly $95 million).

The structure of the deal follows the pattern typical of these big-money transfers: 65 million pounds guaranteed plus 5 million more in add-ons tied to performance targets. Brighton also made sure to include a sell-on clause, something the south coast club almost always negotiates when it parts with one of its prized talents, ensuring they'll keep benefiting if the Cameroonian continues to increase in value down the line.

Baleba is just 22 years old and joined Brighton in 2023 from Lille, where he had already turned heads with his physical presence and his knack for winning the ball back high up the pitch. Since arriving on the south coast, he has become a key piece of Fabian Hurzeler's midfield, earning a reputation as a true all-rounder: someone who can win the ball back, dictate tempo and arrive late into the box, all in one player.

There is one detail that can't be overlooked: the BBC's own report notes that the midfielder is currently sidelined with an ankle injury he picked up during preseason in Austria. That is no small issue for United, who need Baleba fit and available as soon as possible to make an impact on the field, not just on paper.

A midfield being rebuilt piece by piece

Michael Carrick's United have spent the entire summer reshaping their midfield. The departure of Casemiro, a figure of real weight and influence in the locker room over several seasons, left a gap the club decided to fill not with a single name but with multiple signings. On top of that came an unexpected blow: the serious knee injury suffered by Manuel Ugarte, which further complicated the club's plans in that area of the pitch.

That is why this signing doesn't stand alone. Last month the club had already completed the arrivals of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea.
