Mantova stuns Lazio with 0-2 win at the Olimpico
The visiting side punished the Rome club's lack of finishing in a Coppa Italia match in which it dominated almost every statistical category.

Mantova pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the round with a 0-2 win over Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico, in a Coppa Italia match in which the home side dominated nearly every indicator of the game except the one that actually mattered: the scoreboard. Francesco Ruocco and, deep into stoppage time following a VAR review, Ismael Cajazzo, sealed a victory that harshly punished the finishing woes of a Rome side that attacked from the first minute without reward.
Dominance that didn't translate into goals
Lazio came out looking to settle the match early. By the 3rd minute they had already put together three attempts in quick succession through Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Boulaye Dia and Matteo Cancellieri, the latter narrowly missing the top corner. That set the tone for the entire first half: constant pressure, with Cancellieri as the main source of danger, but also a Mantova side that answered efficiently on the counter, particularly through Francesco Ruocco, who gave a warning with two shots between the 14th and 16th minutes.
The first half ended 0-0 despite Lazio's clear control, and the same script played out in the second half. Lazio kept creating chances (Cancellieri again came close on several occasions, with Taylor and Zaccagni also trying their luck), but Mantova's defense, well organized, held firm until the decisive blow arrived.
Mantova's strike
In the 74th minute, on one of its few forays into Lazio's half in the second period, Mantova found the breakthrough: Francesco Ruocco finished with his right foot from close range, after an assist from Davide Bragantini, to make it 0-1 and silence the Olimpico. Lazio, forced to throw everything forward, turned to the bench, bringing on Frattesi, Ratkov, Noslin and Belahyane in search of a response, and piled up several headed attempts in the closing stages that failed to find the target.
But the match still had one more twist. Deep into stoppage time, with six minutes signaled by the fourth official, a sequence of play ended in a goal for Ismael Cajazzo after a VAR review, sealing the final 0-2 and putting the result beyond doubt in the match's dying moments.
The numbers behind the match
The stats paint a clear picture of the contrast between control and effectiveness. Lazio had nearly triple the possession and more than double the shots, yet it was Mantova that found the back of the net more often.
| Stat | Lazio | Mantova |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 70 | 30 |
| Shots | 21 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 7 |
| Big chances | 4 | 2 |
| Corners | 7 | 3 |
| Passes | 636 | 278 |
| Fouls committed | 14 | 13 |
The estimated post-match xG, calculated from shot locations, also reflects that disconnect between chance creation and result: Lazio racked up 3.146 expected goals compared to 1.466 for Mantova, a gap that confirms the Rome side squandered an enormous volume of chances against a far more clinical opponent in its few forays forward.
What the preview said versus what happened
Before the match, our projection gave a 36% chance to both a Lazio win and a Mantova win, with 28% for a draw, and estimated expected goals of 1.42 for each side. The result ended up contradicting that balanced outlook: far from an even contest on the scoreboard, Mantova won clearly by 0-2, capitalizing on its efficiency at the right moments against a home side whose control never translated into goals.
Takeaways from the match
Lazio is left with the feeling of having wasted a match it controlled for almost the entire ninety minutes, with Cancellieri chief among those responsible for a long list of missed chances. Mantova, on the other hand, walks away with a result that rewards its patience and its ability to strike at just the right moments, with Ruocco and Cajazzo as the protagonists of a night that will go down as one of the upsets of this round of the Coppa Italia.
