Marcelo Díaz hangs up his boots at season's end after 30 years as a pro

The Universidad de Chile midfielder announced his farewell on social media, closing out a career that took him across Europe and the Americas on three continents.

Marcelo Díaz hangs up his boots at season's end after 30 years as a pro

One video on social media was enough to confirm what had already been buzzing around the halls of the CDA. Marcelo Díaz announced he will hang up his boots at the end of this season, closing the book on 30 years as a professional between youth academies and major clubs across three continents.

The Universidad de Chile midfielder, now 39, chose his own social channels to share the news, skipping press conferences and cold statements. It was a direct message, written with the same calm he always showed when running the midfield.

It's been a beautiful journey that, as it happens, comes to an end in year 21. Thank you to everyone who was part of this wonderful dream.Marcelo Díaz

"Carepato," as he's known throughout Chilean soccer, didn't stop there. He added a few lines that sum up pretty well what his career meant to him, beyond the cups and titles.

My only mission was to be remembered as a good person... The dream I had as a kid turned, day by day, into my greatest source of pride. I'm leaving with nothing left to give, I gave everything I had. It's not an easy decision, it never is when it's been your whole life. Today, 30 years later, I say goodbye with the pride of having been captain of the U.Marcelo Díaz

A journey that spanned half the globe

Few Chilean midfielders can claim as varied a soccer passport. Díaz made his debut and came up through the U's youth system, had a spell at Deportes La Serena, and from there set off to try his luck in Europe: Basel in Switzerland, Celta Vigo in Spain and Hamburg in Germany. His stint in the Americas came next, wearing the colors of Pumas of Mexico, Racing of Argentina, Libertad of Paraguay and Audax Italiano, before returning home to close the circle at the CDA.

Along the way he racked up trophies, 15 titles in all. Among them stands the historic 2011 Copa Sudamericana with the blues, an achievement still remembered as one of the club's high points on the international stage. With the Chilean national team he was no less accomplished: he was a key piece of La Roja's back-to-back Copa America titles, that golden generation that changed the course of Chilean soccer history.

Now, with his departure confirmed for the end of this season, a year of farewells lies ahead. Fans, teammates and rivals alike will know that, match by match, they are watching the final steps of a midfielder who defined an entire era of Chilean soccer, from European pitches to the Chilean classic.
