Marseille strikes twice in 24 minutes, then holds off Toulouse for 2-0 win
Early goals from Harit and Gouiri were enough for Marseille to beat a Toulouse team that had more possession, more shots on target, and saw a goal wiped out by VAR in Ligue 1.

The clock had barely started and the Velodrome was already celebrating: Amine Harit curled a right-footed finish from outside the box in the 1st minute, assisted by Amine Gouiri, to make it 1-0 before Toulouse could even settle in. The match finished 2-0 for Marseille in Ligue 1, and although the scoreline looks comfortable, the story on the field was a lot more even than the result suggests.
The second blow came in the 24th minute: Gouiri, this time on the finishing end, connected with a headed pass from Igor Paixao to make it 2-0 with another low shot just inside the post. Two strikes in the first half that seemed to settle the contest early, but Toulouse neither sat back nor gave up.
In fact, the visitors responded with persistence. Jacen Russell-Rowe tried his luck from inside the box several times without success, Thomas Jorgensen and Cristian Casseres also tested the home goalkeeper with shots that found resistance, and Marseille had to defend more than its position on the scoreboard would suggest. Toulouse's hottest moment came in the second half: in the 67th minute, Casper Tengstedt thought he had scored, but VAR overturned the goal on review and the score stayed at 2-0. It was the moment the visitors came closest to getting fully back into the match, and it slipped away.
On the other side, Igor Paixao crashed a header off the post in the 59th minute, and Amine Gouiri, who was eventually substituted late in the match, kept testing shots from outside the box without success in the final stretch. Marseille managed the lead with substitutions starting in the 72nd minute, bringing on Kelyann Bezahaf, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Neal Maupay and Angel Gomes, while Toulouse threw on fresh legs looking for the goal that would never come.
What the numbers say
The match statistics reflect exactly that sense of a game more contested than the final score indicates. Toulouse controlled more of the ball and created more clear chances, but could not convert them into goals.
| Stat | Marseille | Toulouse |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 43.6 | 56.4 |
| Shots | 13 | 14 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 7 |
| Big chances | 1 | 2 |
| Corners | 4 | 3 |
| Passes | 478 | 610 |
| Fouls committed | 14 | 14 |
The xG calculated after the fact from the match's shots backs up that reading: it gives Marseille just 1.345 expected goals against 2.202 for Toulouse, an in-house estimate suggesting the result could have gone differently had Toulouse been sharper in front of goal. Marseille won with less possession, fewer shots on target, and a lower xG than its opponent, relying on the efficiency of its only two clear-cut chances.
Before kickoff, our preview projected a 56% chance of a Marseille win, a 23% chance of a draw, and 21% for Toulouse, with expected goals of 2.05 for the home side and 1.21 for the visitors. The final result, with two goals for Marseille and none for Toulouse, ended up matching the home win forecast, though the way the game played out, with Toulouse controlling possession and creating more chances, was not as one-sided as that projection suggested.
What it means in the standings
With this result, Marseille moves to 15 points from 9 matches played, with a record of 5 wins, no draws and 4 losses so far this season, sitting in sixth place. Toulouse, for its part, stays on 10 points after 9 matches, with 2 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses, in 11th place, 5 points behind its opponent from this round.
Marseille takes the three points thanks to two early finishes and the resistance it showed in the toughest moments, including that disallowed goal that could have changed the complexion of the match. Toulouse leaves with the feeling of having created more than the scoreline gave it credit for, and with the lesson that, in matches like this one, you do not need to dominate possession to come away with the win.
