Matías Galarza heads to Inter Miami on loan with mandatory purchase option

Just a few months ago, Matías Galarza Fonda was showcasing his game at the 2026 World Cup in Paraguay's colors, contributing a goal and an assist that brought him back into the spotlight. Yet upon returning to Buenos Aires, reality looked different: training sessions at River's Cantilo complex, with no place in the squad. That contrast between the World Cup showcase and his exile in Núñez was finally resolved this Thursday with an announcement that completely changes his outlook.

Inter Miami officially confirmed the arrival of the Paraguayan midfielder on loan, with a purchase option, in a deal that will keep him in pink through the end of the 2026 season. The Fort Lauderdale club, with Lionel Messi as its headline star, confirmed the move in a statement explaining that Galarza will join the squad "pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 visa."

What gives this move its real significance is that Galarza, along with Fabricio Bustos and Matías Viña, was one of the few players still frozen out of River's first team. An uncomfortable position for someone who, just months earlier, was playing at a World Cup with his national team. Now, according to reports out of Núñez, the purchase option Inter Miami holds is actually closer to a mandatory purchase clause tied to objectives, which would open the door to a permanent departure from the Argentine club once the loan concludes.

A journey through several countries

Galarza's path has hardly been that of a one-club player. Developed in the youth ranks at Olimpia, he made his professional debut at Vasco da Gama, spent time on loan at Coritiba, and also played for Talleres before arriving at River, where he only managed to establish himself during 2025. That late adaptation process coincided, curiously enough, with the best form of his career.

The first half of 2026 found him on loan once again, this time at Atlanta United, a club that ultimately did not exercise its purchase option on him. His return to River did not bring him playing time, leaving him in that same contrast mentioned earlier: while La Albirroja made him a standout at the World Cup, his own club had no room for him.

At 24 years old and born in Asunción, Galarza has already made 19 appearances for the Paraguay national team, which he debuted for in 2022. Now, Major League Soccer becomes his new destination, with a chance to share a locker room with Messi and finally regain the continuity he could not find in Núñez.
