Matías Satas, the reserve team prospect knocking on Boca's first team door amid defensive crisis
The 18-year-old left-footed center back is on Arruabarrena's radar for the match against Lanús in the 2026 Clausura.

The picture of Boca's defense ahead of the clash with Lanús is far from reassuring. Pieces are missing, and the ones still available are in short supply. That's why, at the Boca Predio training complex, one name is now being discussed that until recently only circulated among those who closely follow the reserve team: Matías Satas.
The absence of Ayrton Costa adds to that of Marco Pellegrino, two losses that complicate the puzzle for Rodolfo Arruabarrena. And although Lautaro Di Lollo appears to be nearing a return, there's still no guarantee he'll be ready in time for the match against the Granate in the 2026 Clausura Tournament. With that outlook, the Vasco has started looking down the ranks, toward a reserve squad that could lend a hand at an awkward moment.
That's where Satas comes in, one of the pillars of the reserve team and one of the club's most highly regarded prospects. Born in Morón, he started kicking a ball around at Club 77 in Castelar before joining Boca's youth academy in 2017. Today he's 18 years old, stands 6-foot-1, and signed his first professional contract with the club through December 2029, a detail that shows just how much faith the club has placed in him.
He's a left-footed center back, though he can also cover left back when the situation calls for it. Coaches who know him closely agree on one thing: for his age, he reads the game in a way that isn't common. That combination of left foot, technique and a cool head earned him a spot on The Guardian's "Next Generation" list, which brings together 60 of the most promising young soccer players in the world.
His resume with Argentina's youth national teams also carries weight. He was captain of Argentina's Under-15 team at the 2024 South American Championship and later went through the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar, two experiences that put him on the radar of anyone following the country's youth development pipeline.
The road to the first team
His proximity to the professional squad isn't new. He took part in his first preseason under Fernando Gago in January 2025, the same year he formally debuted for the reserve team. Since then, he hasn't stopped growing within the club, to the point that he's now on the Copa Sudamericana squad list, something that opens a door not every youth player gets.
Nothing is confirmed yet, but the mere possibility of an 18-year-old making his debut against Lanús because of a defensive emergency says plenty about what Boca sees in him. Arruabarrena holds the decision in his hands, and the coming hours, including the walkthrough training session, will determine whether Satas goes from being a reserve team prospect to a name on the first team's matchday list.
