Mbappe Torches Barcelona With a Brace to Hand Real Madrid the Clasico
A Mbappe brace, including a late winner in the 86th minute, gave Real Madrid a 2-1 win at Camp Nou despite Barcelona's dominance in possession, trimming the league leader's cushion to three points.

Mbappe did what he tends to do at Camp Nou: show up twice and settle the game. Real Madrid took the Clasico 2-1 thanks to his brace, the first before halftime and the second on a counterattack with the clock already reading 86 minutes. In between, Raphinha had leveled things for a Barcelona side that controlled the ball for nearly the entire match but walked away empty handed in a competition, LaLiga, where it had arrived as the leader.
The first half featured more back and forth than real control. Anthony Gordon tested the Madrid defense with a couple of dangerous shots, and Arda Güler answered for the visitors, clipping the crossbar, but it was Real Madrid that struck first: in the 40th minute, Mbappe finished with his right foot from the middle of the box, low and inside the left post, making it 0-1 at the break.
In the second half, Barcelona's pressure finally paid off. A corner kick proved decisive: Pedri delivered the ball and Raphinha, striking with his left foot from the right side of the box, equalized in the 60th minute. Camp Nou saw the 1-1 as the opening to flip the match, and the home side kept pushing, with Lamine Yamal firing away from outside the box again and again without finding the net.
But Real Madrid had the right answer in reserve. With four minutes left to play, Eduardo Camavinga, who had just come on, sparked a counterattack and set up Mbappe, who finished into the middle of the goal to make it 2-1 in the 86th minute. Barcelona had no time left to respond.
Plenty of the Ball, Not Enough Punch
The numbers back up that sense of sterile dominance from Barcelona: the home side had 62.2 percent possession and fired 18 shots to Real Madrid's 10, yet created fewer clear-cut chances than its rival.
| Statistic | Barcelona | Real Madrid |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 62.2 | 37.8 |
| Shots | 18 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 5 |
| Big chances | 2 | 3 |
| Corners | 6 | 6 |
| Passes | 640 | 380 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 11 |
The expected goals data, calculated from the shots taken in the match, also sides with the scoreboard rather than with possession: Real Madrid generated 2.108 expected goals against Barcelona's 1.473. In other words, the visitors had the ball less often, but when they got it near the opposing box, they did more damage with it.
That contrast runs against what had been published in the preview, where our projection gave Barcelona a 54 percent chance of winning, versus 25 percent for Real Madrid and 21 percent for a draw, with expected goals of 2.46 for the home side and 1.68 for the visitors. The result ran exactly opposite to what we forecast: the team with the lower odds on paper won, and did so by outscoring the projection for its rival.
What It Means in the Standings
Barcelona came into this matchday as the leader of LaLiga with 27 points from 10 games played, built on nine wins and a single loss. Real Madrid sat third, with 24 points, eight wins and two defeats. The loss does not cost Barcelona its spot atop the table, but it does trim the gap with Real Madrid to just 3 points, tightening the standings right when there seemed to be room to breathe.
On the injury front, Real Madrid had to shuffle its bench early: Federico Valverde went off hurt in the 61st minute for Denzel Dumfries, and Dean Huijsen also took a knock that stopped play for a few minutes in the second half. None of that stopped the visitors from walking away with all three points in a match that, by the numbers, looked like exclusive Barcelona territory.
