Mexico Sends Record Nine Clubs to the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup Thanks to Leagues Cup

Nine. That's the number Mexican fans will be repeating every time they talk about the upcoming 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup. Mexico has never sent this many clubs to the region's top club competition before, and there's a very specific reason behind that record figure, one that traces back mostly to what happened in the last Leagues Cup.

The tournament turns 65 this year and arrives under the name it adopted a couple of seasons ago, having left behind the old Concacaf Champions League. The prize is no longer just the regional title either: the champion also earns a direct spot in the 2029 Club World Cup, so every tie carries a bit more weight than usual.

How the format works

The competition brings together 27 clubs from across North America, Central America and the Caribbean under a straight knockout format. There's an opening round that filters out the teams that don't arrive with a direct berth, and from there it moves to the Round of 16, Quarterfinals and Semifinals, all played home and away. The Final, however, is decided in a single match with no second leg, which adds an extra edge to that last stage.

The berths are split among the domestic leagues and cups of Mexico, the United States and Canada, plus three regional cups: the Caribbean Cup, the Central American Cup and their respective play-ins. Canada contributes three spots between its Championship and the Premier League; the Caribbean adds three; Central America hands out six; MLS provides five berths between the Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup; the US Open Cup adds one; and the Leagues Cup, that cross-league tournament between Liga MX and MLS, hands out three more tickets.

Why Mexico gets nine teams in

Here's the key to it all: Liga MX has six spots reserved for itself, split among the champions and runners-up of the 2025 Apertura and 2026 Clausura, plus the top finishers in the aggregate table. Up to that point, five teams had already secured their place "naturally": Toluca, champion of the 2025 Apertura and top finisher overall, along with Tigres, Cruz Azul, Pumas, America and Guadalajara.

What pushed the number up to nine was the Leagues Cup: all four finalists of the summer tournament were Mexican clubs, and three of them already had their spot locked up through Liga MX. Since the rules state that if a team qualifying via Leagues Cup already holds a berth through its domestic league, that spot rolls over to the next-best team in the aggregate table, two extra places opened up, and they ended up going to Pachuca and Monterrey. Add to that list Leon, which got in by finishing third in the 2026 Leagues Cup itself.

The final tally: Toluca, Tigres, Cruz Azul, Pumas, America, Guadalajara, Pachuca, Monterrey and Leon, with Toluca and Cruz Azul heading straight into the Round of 16 as the top-finishing champions. Nine teams, a new record, and a season that promises plenty of all-Mexican matchups before the competition reaches its decisive stages.
