Milito stands by Romo after mistake ends Chivas' unbeaten run

Eight games without a loss sounds simple enough to say, but Chivas had guarded that streak carefully until this Saturday. It snapped at the worst possible moment, at home, against Queretaro, on a play that will stick with Luis Romo for a while: a buildup error inside the six yard box that led directly to Gallos Blancos' opening goal and opened the door to a Rojiblanco defeat in Matchday 10 of the Apertura 2026.

The odd part is that after a stumble like that, you'd expect the coach to create some distance or at least soften his words. Gabriel Milito did the opposite. He came out fully behind his captain, making clear that one unlucky play doesn't erase what Romo means to this team.

A pattern that keeps repeating

This isn't an isolated case. Milito looked back and admitted Chivas had already suffered something similar the previous matchday, in the draw against America, where a poor decision in buildup play also ended in a goal for the opponent. For the Argentine coach, the issue isn't the style of play itself, but the execution.

"It's how we play, we have the right players to do it well. The problem isn't about playing out from the back. We didn't get the decision right on America's equalizing goal, it wasn't the right call. And in today's game something similar happened that ended in a goal. We're not going to change our approach because it's given us results. We'll talk about positioning and what to do. There's always a solution to a mistake, that's basically what we talk about with the players," he explained.

Milito was also self critical about the team's overall performance against Queretaro. In his view, Chivas faded as the game went on and paid dearly for mistakes made in the first half, something that had already been an issue in previous matches.

Today we faded as the game went on, we conceded the first goal, and we'd already made that mistake before. We had errors in the first half and those get punished. Even so, we tried to build our game, we had chances to score. But overall it wasn't a good performance from us, credit to our opponent, and right now we need to take the hit.
