Mirko Jozic returns to Chile 20 years later for Colo Colo tribute

Some embraces take almost 20 years to arrive. This past Tuesday, at Santiago Airport, a group of Colo Colo fans waited with flags and jerseys to welcome a man many of them only knew through old videos and stories passed down from their parents: Mirko Jozic, the Croatian coach who led the Cacique to the top of South American soccer.

Jozic was the architect of the 1991 Copa Libertadores title, the only continental trophy Colo Colo has won to this day. That team wrote itself into the biggest chapter of Chilean soccer history, and its coach, after leaving the club, became something close to a mythical figure for generations of Colo Colo fans. Now, well into his eighties, he set foot on Chilean soil once again, and the welcome he received at the airport left him visibly moved. He signed autographs, posed for photos, and made no effort to hide what he was feeling.

"Coming to Chile is something very, very emotional for me. It's pure emotion, because it confirms that I left something behind that people still recognize, that the friendship endures, and that my love for Colo Colo and for Chile is still there," said the Croatian, still moved by the reception.

That statement sums up pretty well how Jozic views that achievement: not as a personal feat, but as something built collectively, between the players and a fan base that, three decades later, still chants the same names from that squad.

A schedule full of tributes

Jozic's trip is no ordinary visit. Colo Colo organized a series of events to honor his legacy. The first will take place this Wednesday at the Teatro Caupolican, where the club will pay him a formal tribute. Along with that comes a symbolic gesture: Casa Alba will be renamed in his honor, permanently marking his place within the club's facilities.

The closing act of this tribute tour will come this weekend, when Colo Colo hosts Deportes Concepcion at Estadio Monumental. There, in front of his people, Jozic will receive one more honor, this time with the field as the backdrop, the same stage where he once dreamed of repeating the glory of 1991.

For the fans who waited for him at the airport, many of them born after that continental final, Jozic's presence works almost like a bridge between generations. It's a chance to put a face and a voice to a story that until now existed only in old photographs and dinner table tales. And for the coach himself, judging by what he let slip, this return also closes an emotional circle that had been left open for two decades.
