Monaco squanders two-goal lead as Toulouse snatches late 2-2 draw
A penalty and a well-placed shot inside ten minutes let Toulouse level at Monaco after trailing 2-0 at halftime.

Monaco raced to a two-goal lead over Toulouse in just nine minutes of the first half and looked set for a comfortable afternoon at Stade Louis-II. But the final 2-2 tells a different story, one of a team that switched off in the locker room and paid dearly for it as the visitors woke up. A penalty right at the start of the second half and a clinical finish ten minutes later brought Toulouse back to life, and they leave Monaco with a point that feels like a lot more.
Ten deadly minutes and a reaction nobody saw coming
The hosts came out firing. In the 28th minute, Edan Diop headed home a cross from Aleksandr Golovin to open the scoring, and just nine minutes later, in the 37th, Matthis Abline doubled the lead with a right-footed strike from outside the box off an assist from Diop himself. Monaco went into the break up 2-0, a scoreline that reflected their control of the game: more possession, more chances created, and an opponent that had barely tested the home goalkeeper. The story flipped as soon as the second half began. In the 46th minute, Flavio Nazinho brought down Mark McKenzie inside the box for a penalty and picked up a yellow card for the foul. Casper Tengstedt made no mistake from the spot a minute later to make it 2-1. Toulouse, now full of belief, pushed forward and found their reward in the 58th minute: Tengstedt turned provider this time, setting up Sion Oppong, who finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 2-2, the final score. Monaco tried to respond late on, bringing on Folarin Balogun, Stanis Idumbo and Ansu Fati, who had a header well saved in the 82nd minute, but Toulouse's defense held firm until the final whistle, even through five minutes of second-half stoppage time. What the numbers say
Monaco controlled the ball and took more shots, but the finishing was close to even where it mattered.| Stat | Monaco | Toulouse |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 58.1 | 41.9 |
| Shots | 16 | 9 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 4 |
| Corners | 4 | 4 |

| Fouls committed | 10 | 16 |
What the result means
In the standings, Monaco stays in first place with 14 points from 6 games played, eight more than Toulouse, who sit 13th with 6 points from the same number of appearances. Splitting the points doesn't change much at the top of the table, but it leaves a bittersweet taste for Filipe Luis's side, who watched a two-goal cushion slip away in just thirteen minutes of the second half. For Jens Berthel Askou's Toulouse, though, the point earned at Stade Louis-II carries a different weight: that of a comeback that began from the penalty spot and ended with a shot that restored the equalizer on the scoreboard.Comments 0
