Monterrey dominates but falls 1-3 to Atletico San Luis at BBVA
The home side racked up 26 shots and 72% possession, but the visitors' clinical finishing proved decisive in the defeat.

Monterrey dominated the ball, dominated the shot count and dominated nearly every statistic from start to finish. And yet it still lost 1-3 to Atletico San Luis at Estadio BBVA. The result sounds like a contradiction, but that's what the goals of a rival that barely touched the ball left behind, converting nearly every chance with an efficiency Monterrey simply couldn't match all afternoon.
The match kicked off in the worst possible way for the home side: just 4 minutes in, David Rodriguez finished with his left foot from the center of the box to make it 0-1. Monterrey responded with persistence, driven by Luca Orellano and Iker Fimbres, but couldn't find a way past the visiting goalkeeper. In the 21st minute, the home side thought it had equalized through a goal from Omar Galvez, but VAR overturned it after review and the score stayed the same. It was a psychological blow right as Monterrey was starting to find its rhythm.
The decisive blow of the first half came in the 35th minute: an Atletico San Luis counterattack ended with Rafa Llorente finishing right-footed into the top corner off an assist from Oscar Macias, making it 0-2. That's how the teams went into the break, a scoreline that reflected the visitors' clinical edge more than the actual run of play.
A comeback that fell short
In the second half, Monterrey came out with three changes and began piling up chances. Fidel Ambriz smashed a header off the post, Orbelin Pineda and Luca Orellano kept probing, and the reward finally arrived in the 72nd minute: Hugo Cuypers, just off the bench, finished right-footed by the left post off a cross from Fidel Ambriz to make it 1-2 and bring the whole stadium back into the game.
But the hope lasted just six minutes. In the 78th, Oscar Macias, this time on the finishing end, curled a left-footed shot into the far corner off an assist from Leonardo Flores to seal the final 1-3. Monterrey kept trying until the end, with shots from Diego Rossi and Carlos Salcedo that failed to find the target, but the scoreboard didn't move again.
Numbers that don't lie, but don't tell the whole story either
The stats sheet makes clear the contrast between control and efficiency:
| Statistic | Monterrey | Atletico San Luis |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 72.1 | 27.9 |
| Shots | 26 | 9 |
| Shots on target | 8 | 4 |
| Big chances | 3 | 3 |
| Corners | 14 | 1 |
| Passes | 667 | 266 |
| Fouls committed | 10 | 10 |
Monterrey came out on top in nearly every category, including 26 shots to the visitors' 9, but Atletico San Luis converted three of its four shots on target into goals. Our xG estimate, calculated from the match's shots, also reflects that gap between volume generated and goals scored: 2.41 for Monterrey against 1.57 for Atletico San Luis. In other words, the home side created more accumulated danger, but it was the visitors who finished with surgical precision on their three clearest chances.
The result also runs counter to what we projected beforehand. We gave Monterrey a 60% chance of winning, compared to 18% for Atletico San Luis and 22% for a draw, with expected goals of 2.25 for the home side and 1.21 for the visitors. None of that held up: the team with the fewest chances on paper walked away with all three points, and by a two-goal margin.
What it means in the standings
In the Liga MX table, the loss leaves Monterrey in ninth place with 9 points after six matches played, while Atletico San Luis sits in thirteenth with 6 points. The gap between the two clubs in the standings was just 3 points before this match, and today's result narrows that margin even further in the middle of the table. For Monterrey, the lesson is clear: dominating possession and piling up shots means nothing if the opponent shows up less often, but with far sharper aim.
