Monterrey routs Puebla 4-1 with a first-half blitz
Rossi, Cuypers, Ocampos and De la Rosa scored for a lethal Monterrey side that got the better of Puebla despite the home team producing more big chances.

It took Diego Rossi just seventeen minutes to open the scoring with a header, and from there the Estadio Cuauhtemoc turned into a procession: Monterrey put four goals past Puebla in the first half and closed out the matchday with a resounding 1-4 win in Liga MX. What unfolded on the field bore little resemblance to the numbers that had been floating around before kickoff.
The visitors' control was so complete that Monterrey was already up 3-0 before the half-hour mark. Rossi tapped in the opener from close range after a Lucas Ocampos cross, Hugo Cuypers doubled the lead in the 30th minute with a close-range finish off a corner kick, and three minutes later Ocampos made it three with a shot into the top corner set up by Oliver Torres. Puebla, unable to find space or mount any response, went into the break down 0-3 with the feeling that the night had already been decided.
A second half with few surprises (almost)
In the second half, Roberto de la Rosa came off the bench and added to the tally in the 60th minute with another assist from Oliver Torres, who finished the night with two assists. Puebla got its lone consolation goal five minutes later when Facundo Almada finished with his left foot after a free kick taken by Juan Vargas, a goal that mattered more for pride than anything else, since the match had been settled long before.
The numbers from the match make clear just how far apart the two teams were on the field:
| Statistic | Puebla | Monterrey |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 40.1 | 59.9 |
| Shots | 12 | 14 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 6 |
| Big chances | 2 | 1 |
| Corners | 2 | 8 |
| Passes | 374 | 572 |
| Fouls committed | 5 | 5 |
Monterrey controlled the ball, won more corners and finished with more shots on target, though it's striking that Puebla actually had more big chances (2 to 1) despite the lopsided scoreline. According to our expected goals estimate based on the shots taken in the match, Monterrey generated 1.862 xG and Puebla 1.543, a far tighter gap than the final 1-4 suggests, which speaks to the visitors' clinical finishing on the night.
What the preview said
Before kickoff, our projection gave Monterrey a 51% chance to win, versus 22% for Puebla and 27% for a draw, with a combined expected goals total of 2.73 (1.04 for the home side and 1.69 for the visitors). The visiting favorites delivered, but the margin of victory ended up being far more lopsided than those figures suggested: Monterrey's four goals blew well past the projected 1.69, and the final result wound up far more unbalanced than anticipated.
What the result means
With the win, Monterrey moves to 20 points and sits in 7th place in the standings, while Puebla stays on 16 points in 13th, with a goal difference that doesn't help its case. The gap between the two sides in the table is 4 points, but on the field, at least on this night, the distance felt a lot wider. For Puebla, the challenge now is digesting a blowout loss at home; for Monterrey, it's confirmation that its finishing can make the difference even in matches where the opponent creates more than the scoreline shows.
