Monterrey strikes twice in three minutes, then holds off Pachuca to win 2-1
Goals from Diego Rossi and Jesus Corona just three minutes apart put Rayados in control, and they hung on for the win despite a late Rondon goal that made things tense.

It took Monterrey just three minutes to settle the game, though Pachuca made sure the finish was tenser than the halftime score suggested. At Estadio BBVA, Rayados won 2-1 thanks to two lightning-fast goals between the 12th and 15th minutes, then weathered a late surge from a rival that kept pushing until the final whistle.
The opener came from an unusual route: in the 11th minute, Jorge Berlanga brought down Jesus Corona inside the box for a penalty. Lucas Ocampos stepped up to take it but missed, his shot saved by the Pachuca goalkeeper just inside the right post. The rebound fell loose, though, and Diego Rossi made no mistake, tapping it in for the 1-0. Three minutes later, on a quick transition, Ocampos set up Jesus Corona, who finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 2-0. In barely 180 seconds, the match looked all but decided.
Pachuca didn't give up. In fact, before halftime, Salomon Rondon rattled the crossbar with a header that could have changed the story much sooner. The visitors' pressure finally paid off in the second half: in the 74th minute, off a corner kick delivered by Jorge Berlanga, Rondon headed home to make it 2-1 and put a scare into Monterrey. From there to the final whistle, Rayados focused on protecting the lead against a Pachuca side that kept trying with crosses and shots from distance, but could never find the equalizer.
What the numbers say
The scoreline only tells part of the story. Pachuca finished with more corners, more big chances and more total shots, a reflection of the insistence that ultimately wasn't enough to turn the result around.
| Stat | Monterrey | Pachuca |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 52 | 48 |
| Shots | 10 | 11 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 3 |
| Big chances | 1 | 3 |
| Corners | 3 | 8 |
| Passes | 487 | 430 |
| Fouls committed | 8 | 16 |
In terms of xG estimated after the fact from the match's shots, Monterrey generated 2.57 against Pachuca's 1.26, a gap that backs up the efficiency of that early burst more than the territorial dominance the visitors ended up having.
The preview had projected a far more even match than how it actually started: Monterrey were given a 42% chance of winning, a draw 28%, and Pachuca 30%, with expected total goals of 2.74 (1.5 for the home side and 1.24 for the visitors). The final result, 2-1, landed fairly close to that forecast in terms of the overall scoreline, though the way it unfolded, with two early blows followed by a long defensive stand, looked nothing like what was expected.
What the match leaves behind
Monterrey picked up all three points and now sits on 17 points so far this tournament, in eighth place in Liga MX, while Pachuca remains on 13 points, in 14th. The gap between the two sides in the standings stands at 4 points. For Matias Almeyda's side, the result confirms that clinical finishing in key moments remains their sharpest weapon; for Benjamin Mora's team, there's the sense of having created enough chances to have at least made the outcome tougher to decide.
