Montse Tomé takes over at Pachuca Femenil to pull Las Tuzas out of their worst run

A change of direction in Hidalgo. Montserrat Tomé is the new head coach of Pachuca Femenil, and her arrival comes right when Las Tuzas needed a jolt: the team is going through its worst regular season stretch since the Liga Femenil began, and the front office decided it was time for a new project.

The exit didn't happen overnight. Oscar Torres stepped down after six tournaments in charge, a long cycle by the standards of Mexican soccer these days. Taking his place is a coach with a resume few clubs in the league could ever dream of landing.

Who is Montse Tomé?

If the name rings a bell, that's no coincidence. Tomé was the head coach of Spain who came within a whisker of repeating history: she led the senior national team to the UEFA Women's Nations League 2023-24 title and, later, the runner-up finish at the 2025 Women's Euro. Before that, she had been Jorge Vilda's assistant at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, and when Vilda resigned, she took over the reins.

As a player she also left her mark. She came up through Oviedo, Levante and Barcelona in Spain's top flight, won two league titles (one with Levante in 2007-08 and another with Barcelona in 2011-12, along with the Copa de la Reina that same year) and earned a call-up for Euro 2005 qualifying.

Pachuca isn't just any club to make this kind of upgrade on the bench. Las Diosas del Viento have made a habit, since the league's earliest days, of bringing in marquee signings, names that went on to define the tournament's history, like Jennifer Hermoso, Charly Corral and Kenti Robles. Bringing in a coach with Tomé's profile fits right into that club philosophy.

The reality in the standings

That said, the immediate challenge is purely about results. Pachuca sits in sixth place in Group B with 7 points, well below the standard the club is used to. For matchday nine of the Apertura 2026, Las Tuzas host Santos at home, a game that arrives just in time for Tomé to start putting her stamp on the team from the sideline.

There's no room for a long rebuild if the goal is to get the team back in the fight. The front office already made its move by changing coaches; now it's up to the locker room to answer on the field.
