Mourinho lays down the law at Madrid: "Don't betray me"

The Portuguese coach explains how he runs the locker room after his return, with non-negotiable rules and a Madrid side already six points behind Barcelona.

Mourinho lays down the law at Madrid: "Don't betray me"

There's one line that sums up Mourinho's current moment at Madrid better than anything else: "Don't betray me." That's exactly how he put it to the Bet It Drives Show when asked how he views the relationship between coach and player. And coming from someone who just returned to a locker room thirteen years later, the phrase carries a bit more weight than usual.

Mourinho returned to the Bernabeu this summer, joining a club that had gone two seasons without lifting a major trophy and that, the previous campaign, ended up firing two coaches: Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. The start of his second spell, however, hasn't been easy: Madrid already sits six points behind Barcelona in the LaLiga table, and there's also the fresh sting of last weekend's derby loss to Atletico.

Against that backdrop, the Portuguese coach sat down to explain how he plans to manage the locker room. And he didn't hold back.

Don't betray me. When I say that, obviously I'm talking about soccer. Don't betray me, and I'll always be there for you.Jose Mourinho

Rules that aren't up for debate

Mourinho has a reputation for being strict, the type of coach who doesn't let a single detail slide. He admits he's more "relaxed" these days, at this stage of his career, but that doesn't mean he's eased up on the essentials.

"There are rules that aren't negotiable," he explained. "If you're supposed to report at 9 in the morning, it's 9 for everybody. If you show up at 9:15, even if you're a superstar, you simply can't. I don't accept that." Still, he made clear that discipline isn't the same as smothering a player: "it's a different thing to give them freedom to express themselves."

The context isn't incidental. Madrid's 2025-26 season was marked by several off-field episodes, with criticism pointing to a lack of discipline in training, including a clash between Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde that left the latter hospitalized.

Speaking about that kind of situation, Mourinho was blunt about what it means to live as a professional soccer player: "You're a soccer player 24 hours a day. Everything affects your work. What you eat, what you drink, how you sleep, even things in your private life. You can't ski. You can't ride a bike." And he went further with a very specific example: "You fall off a bike and you miss three games, or maybe worse, maybe you break a leg. There are a lot of things you have to sacrifice to be a soccer player. If you feel like it's a hobby, you're finished. There's always a relationship between what you achieve and what you give up."

Why he came back to Madrid

The coach also described how his return unfolded, going back to a club where he already had a successful, if turbulent, spell. According to him, after two seasons without the expected results and a kind of "divorce" from the fanbase, it was the club itself that reached out to him.

We know each other. You know us. You know the club, you know the culture. We need you. We need you to rebuild. We need you to kick off another incredible decade like the one the club had. We need a person with your profile.Jose Mourinho

Words that, in the middle of a rough start to the season, sound almost like a promise still waiting to be fulfilled.
