Mourinho arrives at Real Madrid to try to stop Flick's Barcelona dominance in the Clasico

The Portuguese coach looks to reverse a run of six wins in seven meetings racked up by the Catalan club since Flick's arrival.

Six wins in seven Clasicos. That is the number trailing Jose Mourinho before he has even overseen a single training session at Valdebebas. It is also the number Hansi Flick wants to keep padding when LaLiga's 2026/27 season kicks off this weekend. Because beyond the signings, the schedules and the expectations, there is a question already making the rounds across Spain: can Mourinho's Real Madrid put a stop to what Flick's Barcelona has built?

Let's run through the numbers, because they leave no room for doubt. Since taking over at Barcelona, Flick has faced Madrid seven times and lost only once. Along the way he picked up two Spanish Super Cups, a Copa del Rey, and clinched last season's league title with a win over Barcelona's eternal rival. There was a 4-0 win at the Bernabeu that still stings in the capital, and a 4-3 that tipped the balance further toward Barcelona right in the middle of the title run-in. This wasn't luck or a one-off hot streak. It was a sustained trend.

Now the picture has changed overnight. Madrid decided to close the chapter on Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa in favor of someone who knows this rivalry as well as anyone: Mourinho. The Portuguese coach already lived through high-tension Clasicos during his first spell in Spain, in the heart of the Guardiola-Messi era, and he is not the type to tone things down when the occasion calls for intensity. After years of more diplomatic coaches on both benches, his return could restore some of the heat that had cooled off in this fixture.

Signings that reshape the landscape

The transfer market didn't sit still either. Barcelona lost Robert Lewandowski, who announced his departure after four seasons, and sought attacking reinforcements in Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, the latter with a special bond to Flick, who gave him his debut with the German national team. It remains to be seen who takes on the role of reference striker alongside Lamine Yamal.

Madrid, for its part, moved aggressively: Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Bernardo Silva all arrived to bolster a squad hungry for silverware after two seasons without a major trophy. Cucurella, a product of La Masia, facing the club that raised him, and Bernardo Silva's Clasico debut add extra intrigue to a fixture that already had plenty.

Then there's the matchup set to steal the spotlight: Lamine Yamal against Kylian Mbappe, Barcelona's young talent against the Frenchman's goal-scoring power. Raphinha, Vinicius, Yan Diomande and Gordon round out a group of names that could turn every Clasico into a showcase of stars.

Rodri, the name that could change everything

There's one possibility that has Barcelona especially excited: the arrival of Rodri. If the Spanish midfielder ends up in Blaugrana colors, Flick's midfield, already featuring Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo and Fermin, would take a massive step up in quality. On the other side, Madrid would have to deal with a player who controls tempo, wins duels and manages possession like few others in the world.

A potential Rodri-Pedri-Olmo/Fermin versus Tchouameni-Valverde-Bellingham-Bernardo Silva battle would be, without exaggeration, one of the season's biggest tactical showdowns.

Two dates already circled on the calendar

The season's first Clasico will be played on October 25, 2026, at Spotify Camp Nou, in matchday 10, marking the first direct test between Mourinho and Flick. The rematch comes on May 9, 2027, at the Santiago Bernabeu, in matchday 35, just three matchdays from the end of the campaign, a scheduling quirk that could carry near-decisive weight if both clubs are still fighting for the title. A third meeting in the Spanish Super Cup hasn't been ruled out either, though that will depend on how both teams finish qualifying.

LaLiga has 38 matchdays ahead, but one thing is already clear: all eyes will be on those two dates. Flick wants to prove his dominance wasn't fleeting. Mourinho arrives with the mission of reversing it. And in between, a new generation of stars promises to make this Clasico one of the most compelling in years.
