Mourinho Returns with a Win, Barcelona Rout Elche 5-0, Sevilla Leads with Perfect Record

Real Madrid struggled at Espanyol but still took the three points, while Sevilla remains the only side with a perfect record after two matchdays.

The opening weekend of LaLiga 2026-2027 delivered a scene many fans had been waiting for since the announcement: Jose Mourinho back on the touchline in Spain, and with a win to boot. It wasn't pretty, far from it, but in the end the result mattered more than the performance.

Real Madrid and Barcelona, both of whom sat out Matchday 1, made their league debuts this weekend and each came away with three points. Los Blancos had the tougher night on their trip to Espanyol, needing a goal from new signing Carlos Espi to pull off a win that, given how it unfolded, could almost be called miraculous. Just as the match looked set to slip away, the rookie provided the spark that rescued Mourinho's official return to competition.

Barcelona, on the other hand, had a completely different kind of afternoon. No drama here: a resounding 5-0 win on the road against Elche, in an offensive showcase that produced several standout performances. Raphinha and Fermin Lopez each scored twice, and there was also room for Adeyemi to make his mark, scoring on his official debut in a Barca shirt. It was, without overstating it, one of the most emphatic season-opening statements the Catalan club has made in recent memory.

Sevilla, the most consistent side so far

While Madrid and Barcelona are just getting started, other clubs have already played two matches in this opening stretch of the 2026-2027 season. Among them, Sevilla stands alone with a perfect record: two wins in two games, currently putting them at the top of the overall standings. That's no small feat, especially considering several of their direct rivals have yet to pick up a single point.

Atletico Madrid, for their part, have also made a solid if less flawless start. Los Colchoneros sit on four points after winning their opener and then drawing at home on Sunday against a Villarreal side that finished the match with ten men. Given the circumstances of the game, that point was probably a bit underwhelming for the Madrid side, though it still keeps them within striking distance of the top spots this early in the campaign.

With Real Madrid and Barcelona now up and running, it feels like the season is truly getting underway. There's still a long way to go, but these early signs, Madrid's struggles, Barcelona's ruthlessness and Sevilla's consistency, already offer some clues about how the title race might shape up this year.
