Mourinho Returns to Real Madrid After 13 Years, Signs Through 2029

The Portuguese coach has signed a three-year deal to replace Alvaro Arbeloa and aims to bring back silverware after two years without a major title.

No press cameras, no fans in the stands, and doors closed to almost everyone. That was how Jose Mourinho's return to Real Madrid played out, a comeback few would have predicted just a few years ago, one the club chose to celebrate behind closed doors, in an event reserved exclusively for Real Madrid TV and the club's official channels.

The setting was the club's headquarters in Madrid, with Florentino Perez personally welcoming the Portuguese coach. There was no massive press conference, no traditional jersey presentation in front of thousands of fans at the Santiago Bernabeu. Just an institutional video, shared across the club's social channels, in which Mourinho spoke directly to the fan base.

I'm one of you. And not just today, but since I arrived in 2010 and even after leaving in 2013, always with you. Coming back to Real Madrid is coming back home.Jose Mourinho

The deal runs through June 30, 2029, meaning three full seasons in charge of the first team. After signing, Mourinho received the customary gifts handed out at these ceremonies: a replica of the stadium, a watch, and a jersey with his name on it.

A Second Stint, 13 Years Later

The story between Mourinho and Real Madrid doesn't start now. The coach already led the club between 2010 and 2013, a stretch in which he won a Spanish league title and a Copa del Rey. But that spell was also marked by friction with the locker room and a tense relationship with much of the local press, which ended up wearing down his standing among the more critical fans, though he never lost his core of loyal supporters.

Now he returns to a Madrid side in need of a change of direction. The club is coming off two straight seasons without a major title, something that at the Casa Blanca is treated almost as an anomaly. Mourinho arrives to replace Alvaro Arbeloa, in a transfer window that also brought in new faces: Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Bernardo Silva, and Yan Diomande join a squad looking to make up lost ground.

The immediate challenge has a name: Barcelona, fresh off winning two straight league titles, which Madrid wants to stop before a third comes along. For that, Mourinho will have a top-tier spine to work with: Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Jude Bellingham will once again carry the offensive load for the team.

The agreement was reached in June, though the Portuguese coach officially took charge of the team in July, coinciding with the start of preseason. Now comes the part that truly matters: proving on the field that this second stint can turn out differently than the first.
