Mourinho returns to Real Madrid in private ceremony, signs three-year deal
The Portuguese coach admitted this emotional return affects him more than his arrival in 2010, when he was a Champions League winner with Inter.

There was no balcony, no thousands of fans chanting his name, none of the scenes that have been part of Real Madrid lore since 2010. This time, Jose Mourinho returned to Real Madrid quietly, in a private ceremony behind closed doors, with the contract signing in front of Florentino Perez as the only formality. But the Portuguese coach made clear, in footage later released by Real Madrid Televisión, that the lack of fanfare didn't diminish the weight of the moment one bit.
Quite the opposite. Mourinho, who signed for the next three seasons, opened up about what it means to return to a club he left back in 2013. And the comparison to his original arrival was inevitable.
Emotionally, it's nicer than the first time I came, because that was a feeling of reaching the top of a coach's career, and now it's more about this emotional and affectionate side. Nicer now.Jose Mourinho
It makes sense when you look back at the history. In 2010, a coach arrived fresh off winning the Champions League with Inter Milan, at the absolute peak of his prestige, to take charge of the continent's most ambitious project. Now the equation is different: it's not about chasing a professional goal, but, in his own words, about "coming home."
Mourinho also made clear what it means to coach this club in career terms, something he didn't shy away from mentioning despite the more intimate tone of the event.
"Real Madrid, from a professional standpoint, is the top of a coach's career, and surely for any player too," he said, suggesting that competitive drive remains intact, even as it now sits alongside something more personal.
A quiet return, but one steeped in history
Honorary president Jose Martinez "Pirri" was on hand for the ceremony, and Mourinho received the usual gifts for these occasions: a replica of the stadium, a watch and a jersey with his name on it. The club also played footage from his first spell on the bench along with images from the current preseason, where he's already working with the squad.
The coach insisted that his bond with Real Madrid never fully broke, even after leaving more than a decade ago. "Now that I'm back with this responsibility, you can imagine what it means to me to work for Real Madrid, and this is a principle that all of us at Valdebebas follow, that we feel," he explained.
This return also comes amid a busy transfer window for the Spanish club. The squad has added Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries, Spaniard Marc Cucurella (a World Cup winner with the Spanish national team), Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva, fellow Spaniard Carlos Espi and French defender Ibrahima Konate. Ivorian forward Yan Diomande also joins that list, a signing the club itself has called the most expensive in its history.
In fact, Real Madrid has decided this will be the approach going forward for unveiling new first-team signings: private events, no fans in the stands, no mass press conferences, a departure for a club accustomed to filling Santiago Bernabeu for every major announcement.
