Muriqi Heads Home in the 82nd as Kosovo Edges Ireland 1-0

Vedat Muriqi had to wait until the 82nd minute, but when the ball reached him from close range off his head, he made no mistake. That finish, confirmed after a VAR review, gave Kosovo a tight 1-0 win over Ireland at Stadiumi Fadil Vokrri in the UEFA Nations League. It was a narrow scoreline for what the match actually looked like, but a fair one for the side that controlled it from start to finish.

Because this wasn't a win stolen in the dying seconds: it was the logical conclusion of 82 minutes of siege. Kosovo pressed at Ireland's goal time and again without reward, until Muriqi finally delivered what his team had long deserved.

A Long Wait for the Breakthrough

Muriqi himself gave an early warning in the 8th minute with a header that was stopped low to the ground. From there, Kosovo took control of the ball and never let go. Edon Zhegrova tested Ireland from the left on several occasions (in the 27th, 34th, 63rd and 66th minutes), Veldin Hodza pushed forward on his own at the 33rd and 39th, and Muriqi himself came close again in the 38th with a header that flew just wide of the crossbar. In the second half, Ireland had its best moment when Troy Parrott headed a chance toward goal in the 49th minute, forcing Arijanet Muric into a save that went out for a corner, followed by a shot from John Egan in the 54th that drifted wide to the left. It proved to be a mirage. Kosovo regained control and kept creating chances: Zhegrova, Hodza, and then, deep into the closing stretch, Ermal Krasniqi, who had come on for Zhegrova, gave notice with a shot in the 82nd minute just before the goal arrived. On that very play, off the rebound, Muriqi connected with the header that opened the scoring. The home side wasn't satisfied and kept pushing forward: Milot Rashica, Mergim Vojvoda, Dion Gallapeni and even Leon Avdullahu all had chances in the closing minutes, including stoppage time, but none added to the lead.
