Nacional edges Peñarol in derby marked by tribute to Rubén Rada

The defender scored with a backheel at the far post in the 24th minute, as Peñarol bid farewell to the legendary Uruguayan musician who died Wednesday.

The Campeón del Siglo dressed up for a celebration, but also for remembrance. Before the ball started rolling, Peñarol's stadium rose to its feet to pay tribute to Rubén Rada, the legendary Uruguayan musician who died Wednesday the 26th at age 83, a self-proclaimed Peñarol fan until his last day. His family came down to the pitch, a drum corps played, and the Peñarol players took the field wearing a special jersey: Rada's face printed on the chest, next to the club crest.

The atmosphere had been building well before kickoff. Peñarol's fans, the only ones present in the stands at the Campeón del Siglo, greeted both squads with balloons and yellow and black smoke, plus a heavy dose of fireworks. That derby setting, the biggest in Uruguayan soccer, ended up being the perfect backdrop for the tribute.

Once the ball was in play, the match dealt an early blow to Nacional. In the 14th minute, Maximiliano Gómez felt discomfort in his left knee and could not continue. The forward, the tricolor squad's top scorer, gave way to Maximiliano Silvera, setting off alarm bells on the visiting bench right at the start of a match of this magnitude.

Calvo's backheel breaks the deadlock

The blow to morale did not slow Nacional down. In the 24th minute, off a corner kick, Luciano Boggio connected on a strong header at the far post that left the ball sitting up inside the box. That is where Francisco Calvo showed up, and without a second thought he finished with a backheel, his back to the goal, to make it 1-0. It was the kind of finish that stays in the memory, even more so coming from a defender: it was Calvo's first goal in a Nacional jersey, and it came in nothing less than a derby.

With that goal, Nacional held on for the result and the three points in the 2026 Clausura, on an afternoon that combined the usual tension of a derby with a moment of shared emotion for both sets of fans. Because beyond club colors, Rada was a beloved figure across Uruguayan soccer, and Peñarol's gesture stood as the other main story of the day at the Campeón del Siglo.

For Nacional, the challenge now is assessing Gómez's injury, a costly loss in the middle of the season. For Peñarol, the result on the field was overshadowed by a Sunday that, above all, served to say goodbye to one of their own.
