Nashville SC strikes with precision, beats CF Montreal 2-0 at Stade Saputo
A Surridge goal and a Keita own goal gave the Eastern Conference leader the win over a Montreal side that generated more shots but couldn't finish.

CF Montreal hit the woodwork, fired shots off the frame, and once again came away empty-handed. At Stade Saputo, Nashville SC walked away with a 2-0 win thanks to a Sam Surridge goal early in the second half and an own goal from Samsy Keita that sealed the result, in a matchup from the MLS regular season.
The first half was tight, with more back-and-forth than real clarity: Surridge tested the Montreal goal early with a shot that was comfortably saved, and Montreal answered with attempts from Brayan Vera, Alexis Sanchez, Hennadii Synchuk and Dante Sealy, all of which were met by either the goalkeeper or a last-ditch Nashville defender. Neither side broke through before the break, even though chances were there for both teams.
The second half changed everything
Just after the restart, Jeisson Palacios tried a header for Nashville SC, and a minute later the breakthrough arrived: in the 50th minute, Surridge finished with his left foot from close range, after an initial headed attempt had also been blocked, to make it 1-0. Montreal pushed hard to respond, with Dani Pereira, Sealy and Synchuk all trying their luck from inside and outside the box, but they couldn't get one past Nashville.
The decisive blow came in the 75th minute: after a Hany Mukhtar shot that narrowly missed the target, Samsy Keita ended up putting the ball into his own net, making it 2-0 for Nashville SC. The home side kept pushing through Brayan Vera, even deep into stoppage time, but couldn't find a way through.
What the numbers say
Nashville SC controlled more of the ball and was sharper in its passing, though CF Montreal produced more shots overall and more shots on target.
| Stat | CF Montreal | Nashville SC |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 44 | 56 |
| Shots | 10 | 8 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 4 |
| Corners | 6 | 5 |
| Passes | 396 | 499 |
| Fouls committed | 13 | 14 |
In our own expected goals estimate, calculated after the fact based on shot location, Nashville SC generated 2.368 against 0.942 for CF Montreal, a gap that reflects the visitors' finishing more than overwhelming control of play, since the home side actually had more total shots.
The result, in fact, lined up closely with our preview projections: we gave Nashville SC a 62% chance to win, against 14% for CF Montreal and 24% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.87 for the visitors and 0.78 for the home side. The final score confirmed that forecast without any surprises.
What it means for the standings
In the Eastern Conference, Nashville SC moved to 70 points through 31 games, with 21 wins, 7 draws and 3 losses, sitting in first place. CF Montreal, meanwhile, remains at the bottom of the group with 25 points through 31 games (6 wins, 7 draws and 18 losses), 45 points behind their opponent on the night. It was a gap the match at Stade Saputo reflected faithfully: effort and heart from the home side, but clinical finishing and class from the visitors.
