Newell's and Lanus Play Out Scoreless Draw in Back-and-Forth Battle
Despite a string of shots and headers that came close to the mark, Newell's Old Boys and Lanus finished level at 0-0 in Group A of Argentina's Primera Division, a result that leaves both clubs with 17 points in the middle of the table.

There were shots, there were corners, there was even a header that grazed the crossbar, but the scoreboard at the Marcelo Bielsa stadium stayed blank. Newell's Old Boys and Lanus played to a 0-0 draw in a Primera Division de Argentina clash that had far more back and forth than the final score suggests.
The match opened with a scare: just three minutes in, Lautaro Giannetti had to leave the field with an injury and was replaced by Bruno Cabrera. From there, Newell's fired the first real warning shot with a header from Rodrigo Herrera that was cleared away, and two minutes later Walter Mazzantti tried his luck with a right-footed strike from outside the box that Lanus's goalkeeper saved low to the ground. Lanus answered quickly: Allan Wlk, who would prove to be a constant attacking threat for the visitors, went close with a shot that flew just wide of the post off a cross from Franco Watson.
The first half swung back and forth in that fashion, with corners for both sides and no clear-cut chances finished off. Wlk tested the keeper again in the 33rd minute and once more in the 40th, this time with a header, but he could not beat the home goalkeeper. With the score still blank, referee Dario Herrera sent the teams to the locker room after two minutes of stoppage time.
Second Half: More Intensity, Same Result
The second half began with Lanus pushing forward. Tomas Guidara tried his luck from more than 30 meters out in the 49th minute, and shortly after Ronaldo Dejesus nearly caught everyone off guard with a header that was once again saved low to the ground. Frank Kudelka shook up the Newell's bench by bringing on Alan Sonora and Walter Nunez to add fresh legs up front, and Matias Coccaro became the standout name of the home side's second half: he headed a shot in the 65th minute and again in the 73rd, the latter just grazing the left side of the crossbar, along with another missed attempt in the 74th.
Lanus responded with substitutions from Mauricio Pellegrino, bringing on Yoshan Valois, Gonzalo Perez, Gonzalo Lobos, and later Marcelino Moreno and Thiago Laplace, who tried his luck with a shot that sailed over the crossbar from the center of the goal in the 81st minute. Late in the match, Newell's pressed again with back-to-back attempts from Martin Ortega (74th and 87th minutes), but without success. The game wound down with yellow cards shown to Lucas Besozzi, Ronaldo Dejesus and Yoshan Valois, but neither goal was breached.
What the Numbers Say
| Statistic | Newell's Old Boys | Lanus |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 50.5 | 49.5 |
| Shots | 8 | 11 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 3 |
| Corners | 3 | 5 |
| Passes | 444 | 431 |
| Fouls committed | 11 | 13 |
Possession was split almost evenly, and Lanus was slightly more insistent in terms of shot volume and corners, though neither side managed to turn that edge into real accuracy: both teams finished tied in shots on target. Our xG estimate, calculated from the shots taken in the match, also comes out close, 0.64 for Lanus and 0.54 for Newell's, a sign that neither side generated much genuine danger despite all the back and forth.
Heading into the match, our model had given Lanus a 42% chance of winning, 33% for a draw, and just 25% for Newell's, with expected goals of 1.23 for the visitors and 0.89 for the home side. The draw did end up being the actual result, though without the goals the projection had anticipated: neither team found the net.
With this result, Newell's Old Boys moves to 17 points from 11 matches played (4 wins, 5 draws, 2 losses), while Lanus also sits on 17, though with one more loss on its record (5 wins, 2 draws, 4 losses in 11 appearances). Both clubs now find themselves in the middle of a Group A table still led by Instituto with 25 points. A single point that does not change much for either side, but one that also keeps them within reach of the fight for the top spots.
