Neymar and Gabigol skip trip to Ecuador as Santos face Macara without their biggest names

Cuca chose to leave his stars back in Brazil with an eye on the packed Brasileirao schedule coming up in August.

Neymar and Gabigol skip trip to Ecuador as Santos face Macara without their biggest names

The plan that had half of Ambato circling the date on its calendar fell apart in an instant. Santos confirmed the squad list for the trip to Ecuador, and Neymar is not on it. Neither is Gabigol. The match is set for this Thursday, August 20 at Bellavista stadium, where Macara needs a comeback to reach a quarterfinal round it has never played in before.

The starting point doesn't do the Ecuadorian side many favors. In the first leg, Santos won 2-1 and left the tie in good shape. Now, without its two most high profile names, the Brazilian club will try to seal its spot in the round of 16 with a shorter list of star power, though that hardly makes things easier for Macara.

Neymar's absence was, admittedly, the biggest commercial draw of this matchup. The Brazilian had been decisive in the first leg, and his return to Ecuador (this time as a visitor) had fans buzzing, some of whom were already hunting for tickets just to catch a glimpse of him up close. But coach Cuca decided to leave him in Brazil, along with Gabigol, with a tight schedule in mind.

The calendar calls the shots

Santos has a demanding stretch ahead: Mirassol, Palmeiras and Corinthians for the rest of August. That workload outweighed the chance to get Neymar minutes on a field that, on paper, shouldn't give too much trouble to a team that already has the edge from the first leg. Cuca would rather arrive fresh for those Brasileirao clashes than risk his top players on a trip to Ecuador's altitude.

This isn't the first time Neymar has missed a Santos match in Ecuador during this same Sudamericana campaign. Back in the group stage, last April, the forward was unavailable for the game against Deportivo Cuenca. History repeats itself, though the context is different this time: a round of 16 tie is on the line, and Santos starts with the aggregate advantage in hand.

For Macara, the challenge cuts two ways. On one hand, it needs to overturn an unfavorable scoreline against a continental heavyweight. On the other, it knows Neymar's absence doesn't mean the visitors show up weakened: Santos still has plenty of squad depth to defend its lead. The Ecuadorian side will look to lean on home turf and its fans' support to write a chapter that, if it pulls it off, would be unprecedented in the club's history.

The match will be broadcast live through Disney+'s Premium Plan for South America, with kickoff at 5:00 PM in Ecuador, Colombia and Peru, 6:00 PM in Chile and 7:00 PM in Argentina and Uruguay. The battle for a spot in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2026 quarterfinals plays out this Thursday at Bellavista, with or without the stars everyone was hoping to see.
