Neymar Sent Off Against Bahia, and the Club Fired Back With a Statement Over "Verbal Abuse"
The Santos forward denied insulting Rodrigo Nestor, but Bahia, and even the club's goalkeeping coach, publicly called him out.

What should have been a routine Santos win turned into a much bigger mess. Saturday's 1-0 victory over Bahia in the Brasileirão was overshadowed by what happened between Neymar and Rodrigo Nestor, and by the response that came afterward from Salvador.
Neymar, 34, saw red under what's become known as the "Vinicius Junior rule": he covered his mouth with his hand while arguing with Nestor in the middle of the match. The forward later admitted he was wrong to cover his mouth, but denied saying anything to the Bahia midfielder. In fact, he accused Nestor of pulling "one of the dirtiest tricks in soccer" to get him sent off.
Nestor, for his part, told reporters a different story after the final whistle. According to the Bahia player, what Neymar said to him was "very disrespectful, both to me and to Bahia's jersey."
Bahia's Statement
The club didn't stay quiet. In an official statement, Bahia condemned what it described as verbal abuse directed at Nestor during Saturday's match. The statement leaned directly on the club's history and identity:
Bahia deplores and condemns the verbal abuse suffered by our player Nestor during Saturday's match against Santos. With a history marked by success on the field and an ongoing commitment to social causes off it, Bahia has built an identity that is a source of pride for its fans and has become a reference point in soccer.Bahia
The statement went even further, pointing directly at the responsibility that, in the club's view, falls on Neymar as Brazil's all time leading scorer. The message was clear: that status comes with a responsibility to those who look up to him.
"Among the millions of 'tricolores,' there are also many children who admire and draw inspiration from numerous players and idols," Bahia said in its statement. "That's why we hope public figures recognize the weight their words carry and the example they set."
Duda Varjao Didn't Hold Back
If the club's statement was measured in tone, what Bahia goalkeeping coach Duda Varjao posted was a direct hit. On Instagram, the day after the match, he wrote that he lost all respect for Neymar after what happened.
Yesterday was a day when I lost all respect for a great "player" (nothing more than that); nobody told me, it wasn't something I read in the news, I saw it with my own eyes! I witnessed firsthand how spoiled and arrogant/haughty Neymar is, and how he believes he's above everyone and everything, with everyone around him defending him. A lack of respect toward Rogerio, toward Nestor, and toward our institution.Duda Varjao
Will the story end there, or is some kind of sanction still to come? For now, the only certainty is the result on the field and a clash of versions that doesn't seem close to being resolved. Bahia closed its statement by insisting on respect for its fans, "known for their passion and history," making clear it has no intention of letting the episode go unanswered.
