Nice and Le Mans in a Must-Win Clash: Two Winless Sides Look to Turn the Corner in Ligue 1

Both teams remain winless in France's top flight and need points at the Allianz Riviera, with Nice a 50 percent favorite.

We haven't even reached the fourth round of Ligue 1 and already two teams find themselves needing to turn things around fast. Nice hosts Le Mans at the Allianz Riviera with just a point apiece, both sides casting nervous glances toward the bottom of the table, the last place anyone wants to be as autumn sets in.

Nice sits 17th, having played two matches with no wins, one draw and one loss, no goals scored and three conceded. The club's last five matches overall (a different, larger sample than the league record alone) show a draw, a win, a loss, another draw and another loss: just one win in five. In this season's Ligue 1, home and away combined, Nice is averaging 0 goals scored per game and 1.5 allowed, with clean sheets in 50 percent of its two matches, admittedly still a tiny sample.

Le Mans isn't in much better shape: 13th place, also with two matches played, no wins, one draw and one loss, though with a livelier goal difference (four scored, five allowed). Over its last five matches, the club has three draws, one win and one loss. Its Ligue 1 trends this season, across two home and away matches, show 2 goals scored and 2.5 allowed per game, no clean sheets, with goals tending to cluster between the 46th and 60th minutes. Louis Mafouta leads the scoring charts in that span with three goals, followed by Dame Gueye with one.

The head-to-head record clearly favors Nice: of five meetings, Nice won three, drew one and lost one, outscoring Le Mans 8 to 6. That's no guarantee for what happens now, but it's a track record that carries weight when the home side's confidence is running low.

Probable Lineups

With the caveat that this is an estimated lineup of low reliability, Nice could take the field with Yéhvann Diouf in goal, a back line of Antoine Mendy, Xavier Mandza, Youssouf Ndayishimiye and Kojo Peprah Oppong, a midfield of Jonathan Clauss, Melvin Bard and Djibril Coulibaly, and an attacking trio of Sofiane Diop, Mohamed-Ali Cho and Gauthier Hein.

Le Mans, also on a probable basis, could line up with Nicolas Kocik between the posts, a back line of Noa Boissé, Harold Voyer and Samuel Yohou, a crowded midfield featuring Lucas Buadés, Lucas Calodat, Lucas Bretelle, Alexandre Lauray and Adil Bourabaa, and Antoine Rabillard alongside Dame Gueye up top.

What the Numbers Say

Our model gives Nice a 50 percent chance of winning, with a 28 percent chance of a draw and a 22 percent chance of a Le Mans victory. In other words, Nice is a clear favorite based on home advantage and recent head-to-head history, though the visitors are far from ruled out.

Win probability50%22%

That expected goals figure, an in-house estimate rather than an official statistic, points to a game with some danger at both ends, though with more offensive firepower on the home side. It's worth noting these percentages reflect our model's read on the match, not betting odds.

With both sides desperate for points and separated by zero in the standings, this match at the Allianz Riviera has all the makings of an even contest, at least until someone dares to break it open.
