Nicolás Diez opens up on why he turned down Racing

Some offers get turned down without any explanation. Nicolás Diez isn't that type. The Argentinos Juniors coach sat down on ESPN F12 and laid out, in full detail, why he told Racing no when the Avellaneda club came calling a few months back.

The first reason he gave comes down to something as simple as gratitude. "First off, I'm very grateful for the opportunity Argentinos gave me. I had a contract in place and I understood that if there was going to be an exit, it had to be discussed president to president," Diez explained. No handling things on the side, no forcing his own way out.

In fact, the coach himself made clear just how involved he was in the negotiation: basically not at all. "I didn't get involved in the negotiation at all, I felt that was the right way to handle it. If the two sides worked something out between themselves, that was fine by me," he said, making it clear the final call belonged to the club's leadership, not to him.

So what about his immediate future at Argentinos? There, Diez was direct: his contract runs through next year, tied to the club president's term. "We always sit down at year's end to figure out next steps," he said, suggesting that any decision on his future will come only once the season wraps up.

A bond that goes beyond soccer

But beyond contracts and technicalities, what stands out is a genuine attachment to the club where he came up.

To close out the interview, Diez left a thought that sounded more like a life philosophy than locker room talk. "If you do things the right way, opportunities will come. You shouldn't lose your mind over it, and you always have to make a good choice," he said. He then added an important nuance about what it means to take the leap to a big club: "Going to a big club is something important, but the coaching choice isn't always a good one when it's rushed or comes at a difficult moment for the club."

With those words, the Argentinos coach makes his stance clear: it's not about turning down opportunities for the sake of it, but about understanding that timing and circumstances matter just as much as the offer itself.
