Nkunku returns to Leipzig on loan from AC Milan, with option to buy
The French forward looks to rediscover his form at the club where he scored 70 goals between 2019 and 2023, now under the guidance of Martin Demichelis.
Some returns feel like nostalgia, others feel like smart business. Christopher Nkunku's move back to Leipzig has a bit of both. The French forward is returning to the club where he once looked like the best version of himself, this time on loan from AC Milan for a season, with a purchase option built in and Champions League football in the mix.
For anyone who didn't follow those years closely, it's worth revisiting the numbers: during his first stint at Leipzig, from 2019 to 2023, Nkunku scored 70 goals in 172 appearances. That's a remarkable return for a club competing in the Bundesliga without the budgets of Europe's giants. That form earned him a spot in the France squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, though fate had other plans: he suffered an injury in training just before the tournament and had to watch from home as Randal Kolo Muani took his place.
Since then, Nkunku's career has been a roller coaster. His time at Chelsea began with a serious knee injury that sidelined him for much of his first season in London, but it ended with two trophies to his name: the 2025 Club World Cup and the 2025 Conference League. Then came the move to Milan, where things didn't go as planned: just seven goals in Serie A last season, for a team that also missed out on Champions League qualification and will have to settle for the Europa League.
Against that backdrop, the loan to Leipzig looks like a chance for Nkunku to find his rhythm and confidence again in surroundings he knows inside out. His last call-up with France, one of 18 appearances for the national team, came during last November's World Cup qualifiers, so there's also extra motivation to stay on the national team's radar.
A Leipzig flush with cash
The move doesn't come out of nowhere. The German club enters this transfer window with financial breathing room thanks to the sale of young winger Yan Diomande to Real Madrid, a transfer reportedly worth around 125 million euros (about $146 million), after the Ivorian caught everyone's attention at the last World Cup. That money gives Leipzig the freedom to bring in proven names for new head coach Martin Demichelis, who will have in Nkunku an attacking option with a track record already established in the Bundesliga.
It remains to be seen whether this reunion brings back the goal scoring Nkunku everyone remembers, or whether the club will end up exercising that purchase option at the end of the season. For now, the homecoming is official.
