Northern Ireland and Hungary play out scoreless draw in Nations League

The crossbar said no to Northern Ireland, and a string of smart defensive decisions said no to Hungary. In the end, it finished 0-0 at the Clearer Twist National Stadium at Windsor Park, a result that leaves the hosts on top of the group while the Hungarians are left with the feeling that a goal was always close but never quite crossed the line.

The match was part of the UEFA Nations League, in Group B2, and from the opening whistle it was clear this would be a scrappy affair, full of fouls and short on space. Four minutes later, Donley tried again from the right side of the box, once more set up by Shea Charles, but without luck.

Hungary took control of possession and began stacking up chances: Schäfer went close twice between the 57th and 58th minutes, and the final stretch of the match brought the most intense sequence of the night. Between the 69th and 89th minutes, Willi Orbán, Donát Bárány, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alex Tóth and Milán Vitális all had a go, with a header from Bárány skimming the crossbar and another shot from Alex Tóth saved low by the Northern Ireland goalkeeper right under the posts. None of them found the net.
