NYCFC Lets Victory Slip Away as Ríos Equalizes in Stoppage Time
The home side dominated for long stretches, but a Daniel Ríos goal in the 90th minute sealed a 1-1 draw with CF Montreal.

New York City FC went ahead with a lead that looked like it would hold up, only to watch it slip away in the final minute of stoppage time at Citi Field. The match ended 1-1 against CF Montreal, a result that leaves a bitter taste for the home side, which controlled long stretches of the game only to let it get away almost at the final whistle.
The first half was back and forth, with plenty of fouls and few clear chances, until the 40th minute, when Andres Perea showed up in the middle of the box to finish low with his right foot, just inside the left post, off an assist from Nicolas Fernandez Mercau. Before that, Montreal had tested the home side through Hennadii Synchuk and Viktor Radojevic, but neither found the target. The teams went into the break with NYCFC up 1-0.
In the second half, New York City FC kept dictating the pace. Hannes Wolf, Luighi and James Sands all tried their luck after coming on as substitutes, and the home side generated more chances without finding the second goal that would have put the game to bed. Montreal, for its part, grew into the match after bringing on Fabian Herbers, Luca Petrasso and Matty Longstaff, and started causing more trouble out wide through Wiki Carmona and Alexis Sanchez.
That growing pressure paid off right as the clock was winding down. In the 90th minute, Daniel Rios, who had just entered the match, struck a right-footed shot from the middle of the box that found the top left corner to secure the equalizer. It was a blow that left New York City FC empty-handed after controlling much of the match.
What the Numbers Say
The stats reflect that home dominance that never translated into the final result. New York City FC had more possession, more shots and more clear chances, but could not close out the game.
| Statistic | New York City FC | CF Montreal |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 53.1 | 46.9 |
| Shots | 12 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 2 |
| Big chances | 2 | 1 |
| Corners | 3 | 4 |
| Passes | 461 | 400 |
| Fouls committed | 17 | 19 |
Looking at the expected goals generated from the shots in the match, New York City FC posted 1.36 against Montreal's 0.82, a gap that confirms the home side's offensive edge even though it never showed up on the scoreboard.
The numbers heading into the match had clearly favored the New York side: our projection gave NYCFC a 59% chance of winning, against a 25% chance of a draw and just 16% for a Montreal win, with expected goals of 1.83 for the home side and 0.86 for the visitors. The way the game played out stayed fairly close to that script for almost the entire match, but Rios's stoppage time goal ended up pushing the result toward the one outcome that had looked least likely on paper.
What the Result Means
For New York City FC, sitting in a mid-table spot in the Eastern Conference with 39 points through 33 matches, the draw cuts short an afternoon in which puppet control of the ball and the chances created weren't enough. For CF Montreal, which came into the match in a tougher spot with 26 points through 33 games, snatching a point in the dying seconds carries a different weight: it's the kind of result that gets celebrated like a small win even though the scoreboard reads a draw. The 13 point gap between the two sides in the standings barely moved, but the match leaves the impression that Montreal walked away with more than the run of play had offered.
