New York City FC stuns Real Salt Lake with 2-0 road win at America First Field
The visitors were far more efficient than the home side, which dominated play but couldn't finish its chances.
Nicolas Fernandez Mercau set up a free kick just outside the box and, in the 40th minute, curled it straight into the top corner. That stunner opened the scoring and set New York City FC on its way to a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake at America First Field, a result that flips the script on what had been a first half largely controlled by the home side.
Because the match, at least in terms of play, didn't follow that plan. Real Salt Lake created chances early: by the 7th minute, Saba Lobjanidze was already testing Matt Freese from outside the area, and between the 15th and 19th minutes the home side strung together a string of shots (Luca Moisa, Lobjanidze twice more, Juan Jose Arias with a header that clipped the crossbar, and Morgan Guilavogui) without beating Freese. Real Salt Lake kept knocking, but couldn't finish, and that was the story of the night.
The visitors strike
With the clock reading 40 minutes, the blow landed: Fernandez Mercau, off a free kick set up by Agustin Ojeda, finished with his left foot for the 1-0. Real Salt Lake went into the break trailing despite having been the more incisive team.
In the second half, New York City FC sealed it quickly. In the 60th minute, Luighi struck with his right foot from the center of the box, again assisted by Ojeda, making it a final 2-0. Real Salt Lake pushed until the end, piling up corner kicks down the stretch (as many as eight in the second half alone) with headers from Aiden Hezarkhani and Lineker Rodrigues that failed to find the target, but the home side couldn't pull one back.
Numbers that don't quite tell the whole story
The stats confirm the sense of territorial dominance from the home side, which nonetheless came away empty handed:
| Stat | Real Salt Lake | New York City FC |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 52.9 | 47.1 |
| Shots | 15 | 6 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 3 |
| Corners | 10 | 1 |
| Passes | 503 | 464 |
| Fouls committed | 18 | 11 |
The numbers confirm Real Salt Lake was the more insistent side: more possession, more than double the shots, and ten corners to just one for the visitors. According to our xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, the home side generated 1.016 expected goals compared to 0.293 for New York City FC, a gap that captures well the imbalance between what was created and what was actually scored: the visiting team was far more efficient with far less.
Our preview gave Real Salt Lake a 37% chance of winning, 29% for a draw, and 34% for a New York City FC victory, with expected goals of 1.39 for the home side and 1.31 for the visitors. What actually happened strayed well beyond that balanced forecast: the less-favored team walked away with all three points in fairly clear fashion on the scoreboard, even though the run of play, measured in chances, did land close to what was expected.
What the result leaves behind
With this win, New York City FC sits in 7th place in the Eastern Conference with 32 points from 25 matches played (8 wins, 8 draws, 9 losses), a result that carries weight in a tightly packed table where several teams are fighting for the same spots. For Real Salt Lake, there's a lingering sense of having deserved more than the scoreline showed: the team dominated much of the match, but two precise finishes from Fernandez Mercau and Luighi, both assisted by Agustin Ojeda, were enough for the visitors to take home all three points.
