The Mexican midfielder came on with his team down to ten men in a 1-1 draw against Stuttgart, his first minutes for the club since May 24.

Obed Vargas makes Champions League debut for Atletico Madrid after five months without playing for the club

Ten men on the field, the score tied, and Diego Simeone needed to shore up the midfield. The answer came off the bench wearing Mexico's jersey: Obed Vargas.

The midfielder came on as a substitute this Tuesday during Atletico Madrid's trip to face Stuttgart at the MHPArena, marking his Champions League debut. It wasn't just any substitution: it came right after the Colchoneros had gone down to ten men following Morten Hjulmand's red card, and Simeone decided to reshuffle the lineup by taking off Julian Alvarez to bring in Vargas and bolster the double pivot alongside Johnny Cardoso.

What gives extra weight to that 78th minute appearance is this: Obed Vargas hadn't stepped onto the field for Atletico since May 24, when he played the full 90 minutes in the painful 5-1 defeat to Villarreal that closed out the 2025/2026 LaLiga season. Since then, five months without a single official minute for the club: not across the nine league matchdays played so far, nor in the first two Champions League group stage matches. It took just twelve minutes to end that drought.

So how did the team fare with the Mexican on the field? Atletico ended up grabbing a point in Germany. The match had gotten difficult when Jamie Leweling put Stuttgart ahead in the 36th minute, though the equalizer came quickly through Julian Alvarez's goal in the 47th minute. With the final score at 1-1, Stuttgart moved to seven points in the standings, while the Colchoneros remained on four points.

Five months defined by the Mexican national team

While waiting for his chance at Atletico, Vargas wasn't sitting idle. He spent those five months away from the club wearing Mexico's jersey instead, where he did see regular action: he played in the 2026 World Cup and was also included in the September and October FIFA international windows, now under Rafael Marquez at the helm of El Tricolor.

Now the question is whether this emergency appearance in Stuttgart opens the door for Vargas to earn more regular minutes at Atletico. The moment he came on, with the team under pressure and needing order in midfield, at least made clear that Simeone trusted him in a genuinely high stakes situation, not just as a routine substitution to close out a match.
