Once Caldas locked out of Palogrande for rest of August after Manizales earthquake
The Colombian club will need to find another venue for its home matches while the city handles the emergency and inspects the stadium.

An earthquake can upend an entire team's schedule. That's exactly what happened to Once Caldas, which won't be able to play at home at Estadio Palogrande for the rest of August. The reason has nothing to do with league rules or sanctions. It's a decision made in the wake of the earthquake that struck Colombia on Monday, August 10, hitting the Coffee Region hard, with Manizales among the cities affected most.
The news was confirmed on the program 'El Morningol' by Diego Fernando Espinosa Benjumea, Manizales' secretary of sport. According to him, everything was decided at a Unified Command Post (PMU) meeting attended by the club's president, Abelardo de La Espriella, and the city's mayor, Jorge Eduardo Rojas. The conclusion was clear: there will be no professional soccer in Manizales for the rest of the month, because the absolute priority right now lies elsewhere.
It makes sense when you think about it. Police and risk management units have their hands full dealing with the earthquake's aftermath, and packing thousands of people into a stadium in the middle of that emergency wouldn't exactly be the responsible move. For once, soccer takes a back seat.
What happened to Palogrande?
The stadium didn't come through entirely unscathed. Espinosa Benjumea said the lighting system and irrigation system were both affected, two things that matter a great deal for hosting matches under normal conditions. But something else drew even more attention: cracks appeared in the locker rooms, forcing authorities to take a close look at the venue's structure.
We're evaluating the structural side of things because we've seen cracks in the locker rooms and a few things that need attention. But overall, the stadium is in perfectly good condition.Diego Fernando Espinosa Benjumea
The message, at bottom, is a reassuring one: Palogrande isn't at risk of collapse or anything of the sort. What's happening is a precautionary review, which makes sense after an earthquake of that magnitude. Better to confirm everything checks out before filling the stands again.
For Once Caldas, this means an unusual stretch on the calendar. The club will have to play its home games elsewhere while Manizales puts all its resources into handling the emergency. It's not a comfortable situation for any club, but when a city is busy rebuilding, soccer understands it has to wait its turn.
The expectation, based on what's been reported, is that the team won't return to Palogrande until September, once repair work progresses and any doubts about the stadium's structural condition are cleared up. Until then, Manizales has other priorities, and Once Caldas will have to adjust.
