Otamendi publicly apologizes to Beltran over viral shouting incident
The River Plate defender admitted he went too far when he scolded his goalkeeper during the draw with Sarmiento, and backed him publicly after the rout of Belgrano.

Some images go viral for the right reasons, others for the uncomfortable ones. Nicolas Otamendi shouting at Santiago Beltran in the middle of a match belonged to the second category. But River Plate's captain decided to close out the episode in the most public way possible: by apologizing in front of the microphones.
It all started during the draw against Sarmiento in Junin. Television cameras caught the exact moment when the defender, in the blunt tone of someone who holds nothing back, demanded that his goalkeeper come off his line to clear a play. "Come out, just once", Otamendi was heard shouting, after Beltran stayed on his line for a ball that the defender himself ended up resolving with a forced pass out to the fullback.
The scene didn't go unnoticed. A 38 year old leader, a World Cup champion with more than 800 career appearances, shouting reproaches at a 22 year old goalkeeper with just 42 games in the Argentine top flight. The gap in experience made the exchange carry even more weight in the fallout.
The gesture after the win in Cordoba
River were cruising to a 3-0 win over Belgrano in matchday 13 of the 2026 Clausura Tournament, a result that helped ease the tension the squad had been carrying. And it was right there, with the match already decided and the mood lighter, that Otamendi used his time in front of the microphones to settle the pending matter with his teammate. During the game he had already applauded him on several occasions as a show of support.
The defender was direct and didn't look for excuses:
I already apologized to him personally, and I'm doing it publicly too, because sometimes I lose my temper. I live soccer a certain way, I'm competitive, and sometimes because of how intense the game is or whatever... I did it.Nicolas Otamendi
He didn't stop at the apology. Otamendi also wanted to stress the trust he has in Beltran, making clear that what happened in Junin doesn't change how highly he regards the goalkeeper within the squad.
I know what Santi can give, I see it every day. He's the first to arrive and the last to leave. When I met him with the national team I said River had a goalkeeper for many years to come, and that's exactly what's happening. It's about bringing out that personality, River's goal is a huge responsibility and today he did really well, I'm very happy for him.Nicolas Otamendi
In the end, the uncomfortable scene from Junin turned into something else: a captain admitting out loud that he overstepped, and a young goalkeeper receiving public backing from the most experienced defender in the squad. In a locker room that had been carrying some tension, gestures like that matter too.
